Velimir's first signing?

Reports from South America suggest that Paraguayan defender Angel Martinez is set to sign for Portsmouth when his current contract expires in the summer.

Alarm bells are immediately ringing - the only previous Paraguayan in the Premiership was Gavilan, who was rubbish, and South American football is hardly noted for it's solid defenders - plenty of players who'll happily keep the ball up fifty times before volleying it onto the crossbar from the half way line, but not many who relish midweek trips to Bolton and know how to slide tackle.

The 21-year-old is currently playing for Tacuary in his homeland, and club president Francisco Ocampo has made the claims about his move. "He will continue his career with Portsmouth," said Ocampo, adding, "on Wednesday he will sign the contract with the English team"; to be honest I wouldn't be overly surprised if we never hear about him again but who knows!

Martinez has won a Silver Medal at this year's Olympics, and also had an unsuccessful spell in Argentina.
