The Thought Police

It's no secret that in the current division between "happy clappers" and "doom and gloom merchants", I mostly stand in the former camp. I don't agree with every single thing the club says, but I have no reason to doubt their intentions and appreciate the fact that we haven't had it this good in a long time. Defeats to United and Arsenal aren't reason enough to press the panic button, and we've had a tough season with the entire backroom staff leaving. But I'm confident we'll be safe and build again in the summer.

However, that's just my opinion and, as editor of this site, I respect the fact that people don't always agree. But given how this is indepedent from the club itself and is in fact purely here to satisfy my ego and attempts to slowly but surely control the media as a whole and finally world domination, I can say those sort of things as and when I please. ;-)

When the club itself starts to make those sort of comments, it becomes a bit more serious.

The article - there's a link at the bottom of the page - is a decent enough idea in principle. The club trying to stand up for itself in the face of recent criticism against Chalkias, Zajec, Milan, et al. Unfortunately for whoever wrote it, it's dangerously close to the line of "patronising". Now I'm generally an optimistic sort of chap and I can appreciate we're in a good position now compared to a couple of years back. However, I also realise the need to live in the here and now. It's no good saying, "Well, three years ago we were in Division One so it doesn't matter not doing so well now" - because with that sort of attitude, in six months time we'll be back in Division One again.

The article tries to make it's point, but by going back in time a ridiculous amount of years to try and prove we're better off than "the bad old days" it just becomes rather silly. If you went back fifty years you could say we've won the league and so therefore everything has been downhill since then and we haven't improved at all - it's a fairly fruitless argument.

If it was this article alone, I think people wouldn't be quite so concerned. But recently in the local and national press - not to mention his "state of the union" piece on the interweb a couple of days back - Milan seems to have been becoming increasingly vocal in his disapproval over some supporters, and this is just another piece of that puzzle. I guess the current situation is an unusual one for Milan, and in my opinion a fairly undeserved one - people are starting to put him under pressure, question his decisions and some of the more idiotic are even calling for him to step down soon. This is the man who saved us and has only had praise and adulation since he turned up here, so now doubt it's come as a bit of a surprise for Milan to find the tide can turn in supporters so quickly.

But whatever he might feel, the sort of piece on the Official Site is not going to help. In fact, it's probably going to do exactly the opposite - and those who I jokingly refer to as "the doom and gloom merchants" are certainly going to be offended by the fact their very support for the club seems to be being questioned purely by the fact they're showing concern over our run of one win in the last ten league games.
