The lowdown on Portsmouth's mystery man

The player was in fact Amdy Faye, a Sengalese midfielder who went to the Korea-Japan World Cup with quarter finalists Senegal. The plucky West African team also made the final of the recent African Nations Cup, but lost out on penalties. Faye was one of the players to miss from the spot.

Faye, 26, did not see much action in the Far East, despite a midfielder crisis during the group matches against France and Denmark, and the reason for this may not be due to a lack of talent, as a Sengalese journalist once stated: "Amdy is a really good player. But almost every time he has played for Senegal the Lions have lost."

Senegal upset a group containing Morocco to qualify, but his only game in the qualifiers was the defeat to Egypt. His other games include defeats to Saudi Arabia and the afore mentioned Cameroon game, so maybe superstition kept him out the side! He did rebound to play in the 3-3 draw with Uruguay and the win over Sweden.

Faye last played for AJ Auxerre in the French league, who last season were in the Champions League - and played Arsenal. He signed from Auxerre from ES Fréjus in 1998 and the right sided midfielder, although often a substitute, played a big part in the recent success of Guy Roux's team. And, from reports of his performance at Rugby Park, he could do a job for Pompey too! He is expected to play in Ayrshire again tomorrow as Portsmouth take on Dunfermline.
