The Axe Falls Again

Dario Silva has had his contract terminated today by mutual consent. Apparently he hasn't even been with the squad and has been on holiday in Spain for the last two weeks!

I have to admit I saw this coming as the question "Where is Silva?" seemed to be coming from a lot of Pompey fans' mouths yet no answers were being given. There seemed to be two opinions on Silva. One was that he wasn't up to the job, couldn't hit a barn door and was just not suited for the Premiership. The other was that he was an effective striker who always harried defenders, ran his arse off for the cause and always put himself in decent positions.

I am with the latter. I thought he gave everything he had; something which is essential when putting on the blue shirt. He would win headers he wasn't entitled to win and would do his best to give defenders a hard time. Yes, he only scored three goals but then in my opinion this was because he often played up front on his own when he clearly needed a strike partner. He would have been useful to have around if you consider our other strike options currently available to us:

Lomana Lua Lua

Has games where he really turns it on, then has a complete mare. Doesn't score enough goals and not consistant enough but he can give defenders massive problems on his day.

Benjani Mwaruwari

Difficult to assess given his short stay but has done nothing so far to justify his price tag. Still lookinf for his first goal and for me, Silva was a better player.

Svetoslav Todorov

For christ sake Harry, give him a chance! I'm sure all Pompey fans will agree that when he has come on he has looked a threat and he can turn games so why wasn't he even on the bench on Saturday!? Probably the second most baffling tactic played by Redknapp (the first being the refusal to play Priske).

Emanuel Olisadebe

Where is he? I assume he's trying to get fitness or something like that. Mbesuma mark II?

Azar Karadas

He's looked useful when he's come on as a sub. Keen to make an impact and try which is good enough for me.

And so you see, Silva gave us another dimension and worked as hard as he could for the cause. He did have an ankle injury hampering him and was said to be on big wages so maybe they were a factor in the contract being cancelled but has Harry made a mistake in letting him go? I guess we'll never know the answer but I am sorry to see him go.
