First the good news - Argentinian International Juan Pablo Sorin, released by Barcelona, is poised to join Pompey after a return to his former club Cruzerio hit a snag.

Brazil's Cruzerio already have two registered foreign players - and they are not allowed to field any more than that. He first joined the club for 5 million dollars from River Plate, but has had periods with Lazio and Barcelona since. Under the scheme, the two clubs would share the transfer fee. Cruzerio vice president Zeze Perella commented: 'It's an interesting proposal because Sorin could perform well there and increase his value.

'He could then be sold to another European team in the future'.

Portsmouth, who have also been linked with Newcastle's Nikos Dabizas, are frantically trying to shore up a defence with has leaked goals in pre-season. However, a £300,000 swoop for Ajax's Andre Bergdolmo has stalled due to 'rediculous' demands from the Norwegian.

And it transpires that Parma left-back Paolo Vanoli has chosen Glasgow Rangers over Pompey after consulting with former Rangers player and countryman Lorenzo Amoruso.
