Portsmouth vs Wycombe Preview

Last updated : 19 September 2014 By Jim Bonner

Pompey will be looking to win their second home match in a week when they take on high-flying Wycombe at Fratton Park.

Team News

Nicky Shorey and Ricky Holmes are available again after recovering from injuries but Ben Chorley remains sidelined. Nigel Atangana has returned to training but isn't expected to be fit in time for the match.

Former Pompey striker Paris Cowan-Hall and Steven Craig are to be assessed ahead of tomorrow's match after they missed the midweek win over Plymouth but manager Gareth Ainsworth may stick with the same side that started that match anyway.

The Match

Having narrowly escaped the relegation trap door last season, Wycombe have began this season with a flourish and have now made themselves a difficult team to beat, which will surely be the case again tomorrow.

Pompey finally got back to winning ways after a slow start on Tuesday but there were signs that the confidence is starting to flow back into the side towards the end of the match with Dagenham, albeit against ten men.

It seems like Andy Awford has finally decided to stick with a formation and better yet, has hinted he will stick with the same team that beat the Daggers. He might just find it hard to resist putting Nicky Shorey back in the side at he expense of Dan Butler, but that would be harsh on the youngster who played very well on Tuesday night.

The Chairboys will represent a different test to Dagenham on Saturday. They play an aggressive, pressing game and aren't afraid to get in the opposition players' faces. They also seem to like a bit of gamesmanship if they can get away with it.

They're a difficult side to break down but on the flip side they don't score many goals either. They tend to eke out wins rather than thrash the opposition so if Pompey's attacking players can reproduce the performance shown in the second half against Dagenham tomorrow, then Pompey should be able to win the match although some of the defending on Tuesday night left a lot to be desired.

This is a tough match to call but there is a feeling that the worst is over for Pompey for the time being and the club are starting to gain some upward momentum again. Another three points will be hard earned on Saturday.

Last Time: Portsmouth 2 Wycombe Wanderers 2 (League Two - 03/12/2013)

After the original fixture had been abandoned at half-time due to a torrential downpour, Wycombe took the lead when McClure turned in the box and fired past Trevor Carson and David Connolly then had a penalty saved in the second half.

Pompey did equalise when Andy Barcham turned in Holmes' cross and Holmes was the provider for Agyemang to head the ball past Ingram with only minutes to play. However, Pompey couldn't hold on as Anthony Stewart headed in a corner in the dying seconds of the match to deny Andy Awford a win as caretaker manager.

My Prediction

This is a tough match to call but Tuesday's win and the feeling that Awford won't tinker with the side makes me believe that Pompey will edge a tight match.
