Pompey Gift Bluebirds Victory

Pompey fans are faced with a familiar look to the league table after today's result as once again Portsmouth are rock bottom of the pile.

Steve Cotterill's men shot themselves in the foot by handing two goals to Cardiff on a plate.

Hayden Mullins made the first gaffe by turning in Danny Drinkwater's through ball with a sublime, though unfortunate, pass into the corner of his own net. He cannot be entirely to blame for that though, as it was Wilson's fault for getting caught in possession in the first place.

The second goal came early in the second half as Sonko's indecisiveness led to Ashdown rushing out to take a ball he was never going to get which left an empty net for Jay Bothroyd to steal the ball and fire it into an empty net.

Pompey's best chance came when 1-0 down in the first half, as Nugent forced a superb save from David Marshall but a couple of Wilson long shots aside, I don't remember any real chances for us as the Bluebirds defence was too difficult to break down.

Andy Keogh had a goal ruled out late on for offside as Pompey slumped to their third defeat in four games.

One of the main reasons why we lost this game was that we were so slow in possession that Dave Jones' men had all the time in the world to get back and get organised and yet when they attacked, they broke at pace with Bellamy the main architect and had us penned in our own half for long periods of the game.

It wasn't just our lack of pace that caused our demise as the same old problems continued to rear their ugly heads. The defence, Sonko in particular, continued to hoof the ball aimlessly and yet again the midfield could not create anything for the frontmen.

However, my biggest concern was the lack of effort shown by some our players who don't seem to want to be at the club. Aaron Mokoena is the biggest culprit here, he has gone from a man who put his body on the line at Wembley to someone who doesn't show that same commitment anymore.

Steve Cotterill faces a few difficult days ahead to bring in players that are going to help the club climb the table and more importantly, want to play for Portsmouth.

We should be getting a quality winger in Liam Lawrence and an instinctive goalscorer in Dave Kitson but that will be offset by our only creative midfielder leaving.

So, getting in a creative midfielder to replace him must be the top priority and I would hope we can sign a right back and possibly even another winger. I emphasise the word hope, as I certainly do not expect many players to arrive by Tuesday.

And if that is the case, then judging by how easily Cardiff beat us today, despite the defeat being our own making, then our only aim of the season will be to finish 21st and it will be an aim that we will struggle to achieve.
