Young guns in action

Despite being on loan to Championship sides and yet to start a Premiership game between them this season, Gary O'Neil and Richard Duffy continue to be selected for their national U21 sides.

Gazza wore the captain's armband as England U21s met their Azerbaijan counterparts. He was substituted in the second half as England battled their way to a 0-0 draw, a result that means England lose their 100% winning record in this qualifying campaign. Former Portsmouth target Nigel Reo-Coker was sent off for fighting with a little over ten minutes remaining, but all in all a case of "two points lost" for the young Lions - although they do remain top of their group.

Meanwhile Richard Duffy returned to Swansea's Vetch Field, the club from which he joined Pompey. He played well throughout and also featured in the build up to the second goal, as his Wales team drew 2-2 with Poland. Duffy had spoken in the week to the media about how playing U21 football had brought him up against better class opposition and made him a better player; let's hope it benefits us in the long run.
