Yakubu won't hide behind excuses

Yakubu has scored winners against Southampton and at Blackburn in the last two games, leaving Portsmouth two points from the relegation zone going into the ever-crucial Easter period.

But the Nigerian is unhappy with his return this season, saying: I was brought here to score goals and I can't hide behind excuses if I get the chances and don't take them.

"My job is to score from open play and I went for a spell without doing that before the wins" he said.

"There is always a bit of pressure attached to every game but especially for you when you are supposed to be a goalscorer and you have not been scoring.

"I've heard strikers try to say that they are trying to contribute something else when they don't score but know the truth about that. We are here to score and that is what we need" he added.
