The Nigerian's agent has suggested that there are ongoing talks with Premiership rivals Middlesbrough - but Yakubu's departure has been a main talking point all summer, despite the club insisting that he is not for sale.

“I’m happy where I am and I’m under contract at Portsmouth. Unless someone tells me any different I want to stay, I don’t want to leave Fratton Park" said Yakubu.

“I have had two great seasons and I play in front of the best football fans in the country. Why would I want a change? At the moment I’m only focused on the new season and playing with Portsmouth.”

“I want to build on last season’s success. I want to improve as a striker, score more goals and bring success to my club. People talk about ambitions and I feel that if we can move on from the last campaign why shouldn’t we be thinking about Europe?

“Teams like Charlton, Bolton and Birmingham have done well in the Premier League, why can’t we? Don’t forget we finished ahead of Manchester City, Tottenham, Everton and Blackburn. Who would have predicted that last season?”
