West Ham vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 25 December 2006 By Jim Bonner
Pompey play West Ham on Boxing Day for the second consecutive season, although this time it's at Upton Park for a feast of festive football.

The Hammers currently lie in the bottom three but have had an upturn in form since the arrival of Alan Curbishley, having beaten Manchester United and drawn at Fulham. Harry Redknapp doesn't have the best record against Curbishley, so it's going to be a tough game on Tuesday.

Captain Nigel Reo-Coker is suspended and Danny Gabbidon is rated 50/50 for the game. Javier Mascherano is likely to play and Carlos Tevez might also start.

Benjani faces a late test on his hamstring but even if he is passed fit I think Harry will play a 4-5-1 away from home to protect our strikers during the busy festive schedule. The 4-5-1 has served us well at Anfield and the Emirates Stadium and if we can contain West Ham then we've always got a chance of nicking one against their rather generous defence.

This is our first real "winnable" away game since we beat Charlton way back in the season. I feel we can beat them but they're going to be fired up so we'll have to be at our best to take the three points.

Finally, it's now officially Christmas Day so I wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas! Let's hope Pompey can give us a great present on Boxing Day!

Premiership Past: West Ham United vs Pompey

05/06: West Ham United 2 Pompey 4

The Great Escape continued at West Ham who fielded a semi-weakened side. Lomana LuaLua scored early on and Sean Davis doubled the lead soon after. Pedro Mendes then scored his third screamer in two games to inexplicably put Pompey 3-0 up at half time.

After the break Teddy Sheringham grabbed one back but the win was confirmed when Toddy also scored against his former club. Yossi Benayoun scored a late consolation but the day belonged to the travelling fans as Pompey continued their surge to Premiership safety.
