We're Not Going On A European Tour

The Football Association and the Premier League have rejected Pompey's appeal to play in next season's Europa League.

This comes as no surprise given that Pompey's £120 million debt was made public yesterday. Andrew Andronikou says he'll fight Pompey's cause but it seems like he'll be fighting a futile battle.

As a fan, I'm disappointed that there'll be no fantastic Euro trips next year, especially as Guimaraes and Wolfsburg were memorable journeys back in 2008.

However, next season we have absolutely no idea how big our squad is going to be and how many quality players we will have. If Pompey were granted their passage into Europe then next season will contain at least 50 games, with another 6 on top of that if the initial qualifying round is navigated.

In all honesty, would all of those extra games be beneficial to Pompey's scrap in the Championship next season? The TV revenue would be handy, although it isn't much, and being in Europe won't really make much difference in attracting better players to Fratton Park as we'll be in for an early exit anyway.

Because Pompey will be denied their place in Europe, it will instead go to the 7th placed Premier League team which is almost certain to be either Aston Villa or Liverpool.

There have been conspiracy theories that the FA and Premier League rejected Pompey's appeal just to be certain that Liverpool would be playing in Europe next season. I had a good laugh at that one...

The bottom line is that if this club had been managed properly then this wouldn't have even been an issue.
