VfL Wolfsburg vs Portsmouth Preview

Last updated : 03 December 2008 By Jim Bonner
Pompey go to Lower Saxony tomorrow knowing that failure to beat Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena could result in their elimination from the UEFA Cup depending on what Braga do.

Should the Portuguese side win at Heerenveen and Pompey fail to claim victory, then we're out of the competition. On the other hand, Pompey could lose the game and still have their fate in their own hands if Heerenveen win.

Pompey have already fallen to a bad omen after the company that supplied their charter flight went bust, meaning Thomson had to suplly an emergency flight of their own to get the players to Germany.

The blues face a daunting task if they are to claim their first ever away win on European soil, as Wolfsburg have are almost impervious at the Volkswagen Arena, winning 8 of their 9 home games and drawing the other one. In addition to this, they have netted 28 times at home which averages at just over 3 goals a game.

There is some good news for Pompey fans as Wolfsburg's leading scorer Grafite is out injured. As John also stated in the interview, Wolfsburg are dodgy at the back and could be taken apart if Defoe and Crouch are on song.

Having said that, Pompey's defence haven't exactly been watertight recently, have they? Thankfully it looks like Sol Campbell has recovered from injury to return to the side and get the defence organised again. Niko Kranjcar is likely to start, as is Sean Davis after scoring on Sunday.

If what John says is true, then Felix Magath will employ a diamond formation with the idea to "attack, attack, attack" which could leave them wide open down the wings for Belhadj and Johnson to run at them. In turn, we'd have to deal with a lot of balls into the box and we haven't been doing that at the moment.

It's all set up to be a cracking tie with both teams in excellent scoring form but leaking goals all over the place too. I wonder what Tony Adams will do should we take the lead, or more importantly what he does if we fall behind.

After a pathetic showing following an early goal for Braga in Portugal, it would be my worst nightmare to watch us wilt like that again. I think we will be much stronger this time and hopefully the travelling Pompey fans and I will be richly rewarded for making the journey.

Spielen Sie oben Pompey!
