Tuesday Update - Fratton Faithful

Tuesday Update

Last updated : 15 August 2006 By Jim Bonner
Greetings Ladies and Gentleman and welcome to the Tuesday Update. The article that will bring you bang up to date with everything Pompey, even if it is a little late and you already know some of it already! But hey, it's better than Sky Sports recycling old news in an attempt to create a new story eh?

Anyway, onto the pressing matters of the week.

There seems to be a nasty injury curse around Fratton Park and once again it has struck just a week before the new season begins. If Pompey fans were a bit sceptical about David James' signing then they might be a little more appeased seeing as Dean Kiely is the newest casualty on the injury list, leaving James as the only fit 'keeper currently at Pompey as both Deano and Ashdown are out for at least a month. This will probably mean an emergency loan coming in just incase. But who? Alan Knight perhaps....?

The injuries get worse as Benjani looks to miss the season opener which means we're without our two first choice strikers and therefore Toddy and impending signing Kanu will play up front against Blackburn. There have also been niggly injuries to a couple of midfield players but fingers crossed they should be fine for Saturday.

Some better news now and Manuel Fernandes is set to sign for Pompey if he passes another medical tommorow. It's rumoured that he will sign on a five year deal from Benfica and the fee for one of Portugal's best young players will smash our record transfer fee for Benjani in January. Hopefully he signs in time for the Blackburn game because the squad is still threadbare at the moment. There is still no fresh news on Vargas at this current time however.

Finally, contrary to reports in "The Snooze" Milan Mandaric will not be leaving Pompey for good this Saturday. He does admit however that he is "almost done" with the club and feels that he is contributing nothing to the Pompey cause in his non-executive director role on the board at PFC.

That's it for now. Expect the announcement of Kanu signing for Pompey shortly as the season opener draws ever closer...
