The Ultimate Hypothetical Question

Last updated : 05 February 2009 By Jim Bonner
Let's face it, this season has been a major disappointment after the extreme highs of the previous campaign and a promising start to the summer transfer window before it all started going pear shaped.

So, in the interest of light relief I asked my Pompey supporting colleagues at work a question that really had them thinking. It was a completely hypothetical question and didn't have anything to do with Pompey directly but given such a miserable season we can always count on Southampton and Tottenham to give us some light relief.

Pompey fans have many a reason to dislike both clubs so my question is this:

If you had the choice to relegate either Southampton or Tottenham at the end of the season BUT guarantee the survival of the other club in the process, who would you choose?

The reason I ask this is to gauge how much the dislike for our neighbours has dwindled since their downfall and to gain a measure of how much we really dislike arguably the most successful manager in the history of this club.

Ultimately it is just a bit of hypothetical fun though, so don't be a bore by claiming "only Pompey matter" because you know deep down you'd take deep joy in either Saints or Redknapp taking the drop.

On one hand you have our dearest neighbours down the road who have taken much delight in our struggles in the past. They were famous for doing nothing during their long stay in the top flight (apart from one 2nd place finish as they'll remind you!) yet there was always some jealousy from our supporters as Southampton were (enviably) a stable Premiership club with a brand new stadium that we wanted to emulate.

Now they stand on the brink of relegation to League One, and as a younger generation fan I have never seen Pompey play in the third tier of English football. Therefore to see our arch rivals there would no doubt delight me and many other Pompey fans and would surely kill any arguement over who the superior side on the South Coast is (for a while anyway).

However, on the other hand you have "Double-Judas" Harry Redknapp, the manager of a side that spectacularly fail to live up to the expectations of their over-expectant fans.

Personally I've got nothing against Tottenham supporters. Sure, the club has more than its fair share of annoying morons for fans but the majority of them are good for banter and know their footie better than most.

But I'm sure there isn't a single Pompey fan who wouldn't love to see Harry Redknapp eat his words and be served justice for his disloyalty (again) and be relegated having thought the grass was greener on the other side when leaving cash-strapped Pompey in the lurch.

In his defence he has only said good things about us since he ditched us but his actions have left an extremely bitter taste in the mouth of all Pompey fans. The manner in which he left us for a club who were bottom of the league with two points has been a hard pill to swallow, especially after his "Pompey 'til I die" statements just weeks before.

So, would you rather see the enemy sink to depths unknown to the majority of both Pompey fans and Scummers or would you prefer Redknapp to get his comeuppance for his disloyalty and dishonesty?

I will create a poll question on the front page asking what you'd prefer to see, but remember that in this hypothetical situation that the club you don't pick will survive. (If only it could be both, eh?)

Happy Voting!
