The Rumour Mill

Last updated : 07 December 2006 By Jim Bonner
Firstly, apologies for not updating since Sunday. It's that time of year where everything seems to be happening at once! In contrast, there hasn't been anything (official) happening at Pompey worth talking about. However as you'd expect, the rumour mill is churning out some stories. Here's the latest.

Last weekend there were rumours that Milan Mandaric still owned part of Portsmouth Football Club. There were other reports that suggested that Alexandre Gaydamak still owed Milan money after taking full control of the club in July.

Milan has since scotched these rumours but I, like other Pompey fans, still remain a bit sceptical about Sacha's involvement with Pompey. Since he took over in January, we have barely heard a whisper from him. He doesn't even write anything in the matchday programme (although last season it was probably ghost written.)

Gaydamak's silence seems deafening at times. Does he actually owe Milan anything? Does Harry really have sufficient funds to spend in January? What's the latest on the stadium? You can read all the newspaper reports in the world, but it would be nice if Sacha himself came out and clarified the situation.

It doesn't matter if the news isn't as rosy as everyone expects, but us fans deserve to know the truth. We've been kept in the dark over so much in recent years, so it would be a gesture if Sacha, or someone high up in the club would tell us what the hell is going on.

Onto the player rumours now and there's a strange one doing the rounds at the moment.

With the 2006 MLS season over, there's a rumour doing the rounds suggesting that Shaka Hislop could be on his way back to Pompey to join up with Harry Redknapp as a player-coach. Fathomable?

Well Dean Kiely will probably be off in January which would only leave us with two recognised 'keepers at the club. Ashdown might even be on his way too. We all know that despite being 37 years of age he would do a good backup job should David James get injured. He has previously expressed his wish to become a coach at Pompey during Redknapp's first spell in charge. Watch this space on this one...

The latest player to be linked to Pompey is Bordeaux defender Gerald Cid. The 23-year-old is out of contract in June and has fallen out of favour with the coach of the French club. I don't really know anything about this player but he has been part of a team that are notoriously tight at the back, so that could suggest he isn't a bad player. I'll dig up more on Cid should the links get stronger.

Khalilou Fadiga is also rumoured to be signing for Pompey after impressing during a trial period with the club. The 31-year-old former Senegal midfielder was released by Bolton in the summer.

Finally, James Keene has left Pompey for good as he has gone back to Scandinavia to join Swedish club Elfsborg. I thought he looked quite good for us when he came on but obviously Harry thinks differently. The 21-year-old has signed a five year deal with the club.

That signing means Pompey only have five registered strikers at the club. Two are currently injured, one is playing within the pain barrier and another is out on loan. LuaLua was spotted in Portsmouth walking freely so how bad the injury is, is anyone's guess. Cole is seemingly out until the new year so Harry might feel the need to purchase a striker in the transfer window although he says it's unlikely to be Nugent or Defoe. Redknapp says the priority is a direct winger, I would have thought it would have been the defence myself.

We'll have to see what happens in January.
