The Opposition View: Scunthorpe United

Last updated : 11 January 2018 By Jim Bonner

What's your assessment of Scunthorpe's season so far?

A bit of a mixed bag. We've had fantastic runs of form and poor runs of form. However, we are currently sat fourth which I think we would all take if given at the start of the season. It was always gonna be difficult to bounce back from the play-off loss last season but we've done pretty well.

Is Graham Alexander looking to bring many players in? Are you worried you may lose key men during January?

Our strikers haven't scored as many as we would have liked this season so Alexander is looking to push on with bringing another one in (Ivan Toney has arrived on loan from Newcastle since this question was asked.)

We've also struggled for players in centre midfield, a recognised centre midfielder not playing in a few games. (Ryan Yates has arrived from Nottingham Forest since this question was asked.) We've brought in Cameron McGeehan from Barnsley on loan to fill that gap already. We're mostly worried about losing our most creative player Hakeeb Adelakun. His contract is up at the end of the year and we may be forced to cash in.

Who have been the key performers for the Iron so far this season?

Our best player has been our centre midfielder Funso Ojo. We brought him in to fill the gap left by Stephen Dawson after he left in summer. He has been incredible so far for us and has actually looked much better than Dawson. Our other two best players have been Hakeeb Adelakun and Duane Holmes.

What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of your side?

Our biggest strength would be our defending. We tend to absord a lot of shots on goal against teams. We usually limit teams to hopeful long efforts due to our strong defending. Our biggest weakness is our ability to control a game. We usually get overrun in midfield due to only having one talented midfielder. Teams who have a centre midfield who can put their foot on the ball will dominate the game against us.

Pompey currently lie in the play-off positions with Scunthorpe and boast an impressive home record. Would you take a draw on Saturday?

100%. It appears Fratton Park is a very difficult place to visit and I would be delighted with a point.

What kind of match can we expect at Fratton Park?

A scrappy one in which you will dominate. This season we've failed to control most away games and like to sit deep. We have two quick wingers who do quite well on the counter.

Predict the outcome of the game.

1-1 or 2-1 to Portsmouth. I am not very confident about winning but think we could pick up a point.
