The Opposition View: Crewe Alexandra - Fratton Faithful

The Opposition View: Crewe Alexandra

Last updated : 28 February 2013 By Jim Bonner

After a sluggish start to the season Crewe seem to have done enough to stay in the division. What was the main reason for this improvement?

Hmm. I think it's because Steve Davis knows how to beat teams. The lack of quality in the league this season has helped. We also cleared up a lot of injuries that badly disrupted us up till October which made a difference. So a number of different things really.

How much would it mean to you if your team won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy?

It would mean a heck of a lot as it would be our first trophy. But unfortunately, year upon year of taking the mick of this competition means that as much as I'd love to win it, if we were to lose, I wouldn't be that disappointed.

Crewe suffered a thrashing at the hands of Hartlepool midweek. What happened?

We didn't turn up, Happens three or four times a season for even the best of teams. Not that I'm classing us one of the best teams!

The manager threw in a new formation and moved key players into new positions which backfired badly. Also, it was just a case of meeting Hartlepool when they are top of the form table and high in confidence. A blip hopefully, nothing more.

Are you worried that Pompey might finally end their unbeaten run at Gresty Road after that defeat?

Oh yes. Definitely potential for a sneaky 1-0 away win. Always hate playing teams who are on a long winless run.

What are your team's biggest strengths these days?

Tricky one. Suppose its our grit and determination (Tuesday aside) and the fact that we are the best team in League One for picking up points from losing positions. We don't tend to fold when we go behind (Tuesday aside), which I suppose it a good trait to have.

What sort of match are you expecting on Saturday?

Hard to say. Either a strong positive performance from us as a backlash from Tuesday and a comfortable win, or more like a scrappy tight game in which we struggle for fluency and grind out a result.

Predict the outcome of the game.

Reckon we should have enough to win, but it'll be tight I reckon. 2-1 win for us I think.
