The Opposition View: Coventry City

Sky Blues fan Jakob Lane answers some questions ahead of Pompey's first game in the second tier of English football for seven years.

So, it's the start of a brand new season. How is the optimism? It surely must be higher than that of the Pompey fans!

In general, Cov fans don't tend to be the most optimistic people and there have been quite a few that are already slating Boothroyd, but I think most of us are more optimistic than last season, although not really expecting anything special.

Obviously if we're being optimistic then we'd like to think of playoffs maybe, but in reality it's most likely to be all too similar to last season so I doubt we'll end up much higher than 15th; maybe top half if we're being really hopeful. But I think mostly the fans are happy with Boothroyd making signings and we hope we might do alright.

And yes I would expect there to be slightly more optimism at Cov than Pompey, purely because the taxman isn't after us and we haven't just been relegated!

Do you think that Chris Coleman deserved to be sacked at the end of last season?

Coleman wasn't exactly bad, and we never looked like being relegated which is always nice, but the end of the season was depressing and he didn't seem to be able to do anything to make us win, or at least a bit more exciting, so yes I think he did deserve to be sacked.

What do you make of the appointment of Aidy Boothroyd? Are you concerned about his reputation for playing dire football?

I'm actually quite happy about Boothroyd, who is a decent manager at this level, and, to be fair, if we're winning then I don't care if we win every game 1-0 by an own goal. The fans aren't going to complain if we're winning (and I personally can't clearly remember the last time we played genuinely good football so I don't think doing it Boothroyd-style is going to be too much of a shock to anyone).

But when we're not winning, yes it will be frustrating and Boothroyd will be getting slated by everyone and then his 'dire' football will be a bit concerning and an easy target for people looking to analyse our failures.

What do you think of the current situation at
Portsmouth? Are we doomed?

I honestly don't think you are, I think you'll get away with the money side of things because so many clubs have previously got away with it and they're not going clamp down immediately because too many people would say it's 'unfair'.

Loads of other clubs get into bad situations, albeit probably not as bad as you lot, but I think Pompey will get away with it and become an average Championship club - you won't have much money but you're still going to be better than at least half of the clubs in this league at the moment.

Martin Cranie didn't get much playing time at Pompey, what do
Coventry fans think of him?

In general we quite like him and think he's a decent player, although he didn't play as often as he probably should've last season for us. He's still a decent defender and in my opinion deserved to start ahead of certain players last season (namely Stephen Wright or Leon Barnett), I'm sure there are others who don't rate him but I think on the whole we quite like him.

Who are the key men in your side that Pompey will have to be wary of on Saturday?

Well, our best player is the 'keeper. But going forward maybe McSheffrey could be dangerous purely because he'll be trying hard and he's not a bad player. Carl Baker is skilful and if he's in the right mood he's dangerous because he actually runs at players, but if he's not playing well he's as good as useless.

Up front, Eastwood probably won't be much of a threat but I'm hoping Jutkiewicz or Platt might be able to do something (Although I haven't seen either play yet so you're guess is as good as mine as to how good they'll actually be).

What are the weaknesses in the Sky Blues team that Pompey may be able to exploit?

A weakness would definitely have to be wingers, it's not really something you can exploit but it's something you don't really have to worry about. I'm hoping Carsley is going to be good although there's a possibility he might be a bit slow and also depending on which centre backs are playing, they can be a bit clumsy too.

Predict the outcome of the game.

Optimistic prediction: 2-0 to Cov

Realistic prediction: 0-0 (Or Pompey to win, I don't know what strikers you've still got but if there's a decent goal scorer then you'll probably score, I'll be surprised if we score to be honest.)
