The Opposition View: Chesterfield

Last updated : 02 March 2014 By Jim Bonner

Is it safe to say that you are delighted with how Chesterfield's season has gone so far?

It has been frustrating at times due to unconvincing performances and dropping daft points, but no-one's gonna complain about a Wembley final and being top of the tree.

Who have been Chesterfield's best performers this season?

No stand-out players, really, as form has ebbed and flowed for most. Gary Roberts is class, though, and when he plays well the whole team 'ticks'. Meanwhile the holding midfield pair of Sam Morsy and Jimmy Ryan give us a fantastic platform. It's no surprise our worst period coincided with all three's absence.

What weaknesses in your team could Pompey exploit if they actually perform well?

There's a general perception we're vulnerable from set pieces, even if the stats don't back that up. There's also a suggestion we don't cope with sides who impose themselves physically and stifle our passing game, yet again it's not necessarily supported by the facts.

Have Pompey's struggles this season surprised you?

Yes. Obviously you're under severe constraints but I thought the size of your fanbase would compensate.

What is there to do/where are the best places to go in Chesterfield for those Pompey fans who arrive early?

The stadium is surrounded by pubs, chippies and pretty much everything a football fan wants. No parking at the ground itself, though. Chesterfield is pretty friendly place, too, with only those who look for trouble tending to find it.

What type of match are you expecting on Monday night in front of the Sky cameras?

At our best we're a fluent, high-tempo, passing side who're a pleasure to watch. I hope that's what the Sky subscribers witness.

Predict the outcome of the game.

This is an opportunity to open up a genuine gap between ourselves and fourth, yet every time we've threatened to do that something's gone wrong. However we've gotta be confident of a home win given respective form.
