The Opposition View: Barnsley

Last updated : 17 February 2012 By Jim Bonner

Are you happy with how Barnsley's season has progressed?

I'm satisfied. 14 points clear of the relegation spots at present, but still in a mediocre position. Even as a fan of one of the smaller clubs in the division with one of the smallest budgets it gets pretty boring.

Ex-Pompey winger David Cotterill is set to join the Tykes. Can you contain your excitement?

He looks like a decent winger, and with the departure of Vaz Te he's more than welcome. I fear he'll just be another player in the mould of Vaz Te and Adam Hammill though, frozen out everywhere else so come to Oakwell have a good season or so and leave us for a 'bigger' club where they can resume their bench sitting career.

Seriously though, as long as he does well and chips in with a goal or two I'll be pleased.

Now Ricardo Vaz Te has gone, who are the key players for Barnsley now?

To be fair to the rest of the team Vaz Te was only part of a well functioning team, he just happened to be on the end of everything, under Hill the emphasis is much more on 'team' now.

Vaz Te was a rare talent, but the notion Barnsley were dependent on him is false. His move to West Ham came about on the back of a very good couple of months for him, people don't seem to realise he's played his fair share of howlers for Barnsley too.

Jacob Butterfield is out for the season through injury and we've lost Danny Drinkwater to Leicester's bench. Jim O'Brien was having a great season until he got injured, he should play tomorrow though and is always a big threat down the wing.

Korey Smith on loan from Norwich looks a class act in the centre of midfield. Also without Luke Steele our goals against would be astronomical.

Like I say though, I really can't single out any one player to be honest, this is a Barnsley side that relies heavily on teamwork, if the team fails to function then even a Conference side would have a field day against us at present.

Earlier in the season you said that scoring goals was Barnsley's biggest problem. Is that still the case or do you have other weaknesses now?

Well, that problem did seem to have been solved with the partnership of Vaz Te and Craig Davies. However since Vaz Te's departure we just seem to be missing that last touch again, Davies has fallen right out of form. Andy Gray is always capable of scoring goals too.

We create plenty of chances but don't put as many as we should in the net. At the moment our midfield is suffering from the loss of Butterfield (injury) and Drinkwater (Leicester), who both seamlessly enjoyed the role of defence to midfield and midfield to attack. The defence looks vulnerable too.

Do you have any sympathy for Pompey's current plight? Can you see us avoiding relegation come the end of the campaign?

Of course. For the fans more than anything else though. I remember Barnsley going into administration a few years ago, it's not pleasant and no loyal fan of a club should have to see it happen.

I think a 10 point deduction could kill your season, it'll drag you right down into the relegation dogfight and with the current state of your squad I believe the other teams down there would have a big advantage over you. So yeah, unfortunately if that were to happen I'd expect Pompey to go down to be honest.

What sort of match are you expecting at Oakwell?

We'll probably come out and murder you in the first half and then completely capitulate after the break. We haven't drawn for 20 games.

Tomorrow could well be a draw. It's really hard to tell at the minute though, one week we can come out and outplay the best teams in the division, the next week we lose to the bottom club.

Predict the outcome of the game.

I think it'll be our first draw for 20 games, like I said above. Either that or we completely hammer you. Can't see us losing, with all due respect. Famous last words? I think 2-0 half-time, 2-2 full-time.
