The Most Ridiculous Story Ever?

Last updated : 23 July 2009 By Jim Bonner
Sometimes in football the truth really is stranger than fiction but today I read a story that I simply could not comprehend. It said that Diego Maradona was set to quit his job as the Argentina national team coach and join Portsmouth as a "global ambassador".

But it didn't stop there. The report then claimed that Maradona's influence would see the likes of David Villa, Sergio Aguero and Samuel Eto'o arrive at Fratton Park!

These claims come from an e-mail from Maradona's lawyer, Angel Oscar Moyano, that folks at Arabian Business have seen. The contents of this e-mail suggest that the Argentine legend is ready to step down from his current job and he has got top players ready to sign for Pompey.

Sulaiman Al-Fahim is good friends with Maradona's cousin Remigio who is also a goodwill ambassador but the new Pompey chairman has stated "we have no relation to Diego Maradona or anyone else" and so looks to have shot down the rumours.

Given that it seems certain that Paul Hart has a limited transfer budget to work with, these "sensational" claims should be taken with the smallest pinch of salt before being laughed off quicker than a Scummer suggesting their team is going to get promoted this season.

This is probably the last we will hear of this ridiculous story, but then Sven Goran Eriksson joined Notts County recently as their new director of football so you can never rule anything out, especially when it comes to Pompey.

In other news, Portsmouth have announced jobsite.co.uk as their new shirt sponsor for the next three years and it's the biggest sponsorship deal in the club's history.

I have to say, I think that the new kits this season are superb and I particularly like the retro away kit. I just hope the sponsor doesn't ruin it.

As part of the deal, the Fratton End has been renamed the "Jobsite End" but I'll be damned if I'm calling it that. No doubt visiting fans are already cooking up their witty chants to throw at us...
