The Fratton Faithful Awards 2011

Last updated : 11 May 2011 By Jim Bonner
Portsmouth's 2010/2011 season has been a topsy-turvy rollercoaster that has thankfully ended with steady Championship survival despite the continuing ownership debacle.

Now it's your chance to vote for the players and moments that you believe are deserving of these awards. If you're a messageboard user then you can use the topic to cast your votes there, if not then there is a "form" you can copy and send directly to me via the "contact us" link at the bottom of the Fratton Faithful main page.

When voting, you can only vote for ONE player/match/moment and please make it clear exactly who or what you are voting for. For example, when voting for a specific match, please remember to include whether it was the home or away fixture!

Here are the eight categories and my thoughts on each just to jog your memory or to help influence your vote. You don't have to vote on every category if you don't wish to do so.

Player Of The Season

Unlike previous years where there has been an outstanding candidate for this award, this season's winner will be a far tighter affair. Neville Dalton has gone into the fine details of this subject in the previous article but in my opinion it's so difficult to call.

Hayden Mullins has arguably been our most consistent performer of the season but yet has never really shone in any game whereas David Nugent has the ability to conjure up something special to win (or draw) a game but has also missed easier chances during the season and has gone missing in some games despite persistence in others.

Ricardo Rocha brings an extra touch of quality and organisation to Pompey's shaky defence but has missed parts of the season due to injuries and suspensions. On the other hand, loanees Greg Halford and Ritchie De Laet added an extra dimension to the defence and have to be considered with the former proving to be a capable centre back and the latter adding extra pace and quality down the wing.

Joel Ward is another name in the frame due to his versatility and how much he has developed as the season has progressed. Liam Lawrence would have been a certainty for this award had he been dynamite during the entire season rather than fading drastically after his injury.

There are some who believe that Jamie Ashdown is Pompey's player of the season due to his outstanding saves that have kept his team in the game, despite some very dodgy moments that have cost Pompey points too.

This one is extremely tough to call!

Worst Player Of The Season

There are probably three main candidates for this award. Carl Dickinson may have given 100% commitment in every game he played but he is still one of the worst players I've ever seen in a Pompey shirt.

Ibrahima Sonko did a job when the team were playing well but when in a bind he would simply hoof the ball back to the opposition and also had the knack of scoring own goals at the worst possible time.

Dave Kitson's time at Fratton Park has also been very disappointing. Whilst Steve Cotterill may not be utilising him in the right way his goal return has been way below expectations of a player whose record is excellent at Championship level.

The common theme between these three players is that they all came from Stoke! It's your choice though, perhaps there is another player who you believe is deserving of this award?

Goal Of The Season

I can't remember Pompey scoring too many crackers this season but Michael Brown's Messi-like dribble round the Leicester defence to score Pompey's sixth was almost unbelievable whilst Mullins scored a corker against Watford.

Nugent's superb run to set up Kitson for an easy tap in at Norwich is also a forerunner for this award although a personal favourite of mine was Ward's chip over the Doncaster 'keeper at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Kanu's trickery at Forest may be your favourite or perhaps you think Nugent's last-gasp volley to rescue a point against Derby deserves to win? There are a fair few goals to choose from after all....

Best Performance Of The Season

I expect the rout of Leicester to be the main contender for this award but the performances at home against Watford and Nottingham Forest also stand out. In terms of performances on the road, there have been many gutsy showings but to come back from two goals down at Middlesbrough and Leeds (twice) is no mean feat and may get your vote.

Worst Performance Of The Season

Oh boy, there are plenty of candidates for this one! Any of the last eight games of the season might be considered, as well as the majority of the early matches but there are four matches that stand out for me; two at home and two away.

I thought the home performance against Burnley was the worst I've seen Pompey play in ten years until Coventry came to Fratton Park and beat us 3-0 with relative ease.

Anyone who went to Preston will tell you it was one of the worst Pompey performances they had ever seen against a dreadful side whilst we could only muster two shots at Barnsley despite a generous referee. It's your call....

Highlight Of The Season

I'd be surprised this award isn't won either by HMRC being defeated in court or by the moment Pompey exited administration just a day after looking like going bust. Mind you, there have been a few on-the-pitch moments to make you smile too....

Lowlight Of The Season

My heart sank on Friday, November 22nd when Andrew Andronikou announced that PFC were likely to go bust after Sacha Gaydamak demanded a significant payment up front that simply couldn't be paid, even if it was emotional blackmail.

In terms of moments on the pitch, I do not want to think about those last minutes at the City Ground this season, though there were plenty of low moments to endure as the campaign dragged on.

Comedy Moment Of The Season

Did the moment when the sprinklers failed at the Scunthorpe game make you laugh and think "typical Pompey"? Or maybe you think that the "lights out" incidents at Fratton Park against Leeds were more humourous? Speaking of Leeds, Andy O'Brien's double own goal at Elland Road certainly got a chuckle from me.

Remember, messageboard users can cast their votes by simply posting in the topic which can be found here.

If you're not a messageboard user then feel free to copy & paste the "form" below and use the "contact us" link at the bottom of the main page to e-mail me your votes. Fill in your details and then paste the form into the "comments" box along with your votes.

There is no closing date for voting but obviously it's best to get them in ASAP as voting will likely be open for a week or so. You don't have to vote in every category if you don't wish to do so.
