The Fratton Faithful Awards 2009

Last updated : 16 June 2009 By Jim Bonner
It's time to vote for the Fratton Faithful Awards 2009!

Due to the influx of news these past few weeks I haven't gotten round to the awards as early as I'd have liked, but "better late than never" as they say.

I've trimmed down the awards again to make things simpler but there are still three categories to vote in. You can vote in either one of two ways:

1) Use the messageboard topic on the Fratton Faithful messageboard if you are a member.

2) Copy the "form" at the bottom of this page and e-mail it to me using the "EMail The Editor" link at the bottom left of the front page.

Voting closes on Sunday, June 28th.

Without further ado, here are the awards with my own input but remember you can vote for anyone but only once per award:

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Player Of The Season

Simply put, Glen Johnson should win this. I'd be very surprised if any other player got voted for, in fact.

Worst Player Of The Season

There are a few candidates for this award. The standout nominees are Hayden Mullins for not being able to pass forward or tackle and John Utaka for not doing anything until the last couple of games of the season. But there are many reasons why other players might be nominated so fill your boots.

Goal Of The Season

Glen Johnson's hammer-volley against Hull is the favourite for this award but Peter Crouch's overhead kick against Stoke, Lassana Diarra's goal against Vitoria and Nadir Belhadj's screamer at Sunderland were all very good strikes.

Miss Of The Season

There were loads of opportunities that Pompey squandered when it looked easier to score. Too many to list here but I'm sure there are a few glaring misses that I've forgotten that you will remind me of, many coming from David Nugent or John Utaka.

Save Of The Season

David James hasn't been anywhere near as good as he was last year but he has still made some important saves. His world class save from Arteta at Goodison Park sticks out in my mind but my memory is going in my old age so if you can remember a better one, let me know!

Blunder Of The Season

Crouch's backpass, Distin's misjudged bounce and Jamo's weak hand were all costly against Liverpool. James has made a few other costly gaffes but his worst could be his pass straight to Misimovic at Wolfsburg which effectively killed us off. But it's all up to you.

SEASON AWARDS

Moment Of The Season

Taking (or even doubling) the lead against AC Milan was a moment I'll never forget as a Pompey fan and the same could be said when Crouch buried those two goals in the early hours of the morning in Guimaraes too.

Domestically there has been hardly anything to cheer about but the final whistle after we beat Man City at Fratton after failing to win in the last 10 games was a huge relief so that could get votes too.

Worst Moment Of The Season

I simply cannot bring myself to watch the last ten minutes or so of the AC Milan game again because we threw away what could well have been the most prestigious result in our history. However, domestically I have also felt crestfallen whenever a late goal went in to snatch valuable league points and we certainly let a few of those in, especially against Liverpool and Middlesbrough!

Then of course there were matters off the pitch like selling our best players and watching Redknapp defect to Tottenham overnight. There are plenty of bad moments to choose from here folks!

Performance Of The Season

You could go all the way back to August for this one after we hammered Everton on their own patch but consideration also should be given to the performance against AC Milan with an understrength team as well as the showing against Man City when Paul Hart took charge for the first time.

Worst Performance Of The Season

You could pick virtually any away game we lost this season as a candidate for this award but the strongest contenders may be the collapses at home to Newcastle and West Ham. Our showing at Braga was also nothing short of woeful so this is a difficult choice.

OPPOSITION

Best Opposition Team Performance

For this award you should select the team and whether it was at home or away. Chelsea thumped us twice, City mauled us at their place and Arsenal's second string also taught Pompey a lesson. Newcastle and West Ham may have thrashed us but that was more down to how garbage we were rather than how good they were.

Worst Opposition Team Performance

As above, state the actual fixture for this award rather than the team. As good as City were at Eastlands, they were woeful at Fratton Park as they let a Pompey side, winless in 10 games, beat them comfortably. I was also failed to be impressed by Stoke, Sunderland or Hull in both fixtures whilst Spurs and Bolton were both awful when they came to Fratton Park but it's up to you to decide.

Best Opposition Player

Robert Green always seems to play well against us and he single handedly stopped Pompey from beating West Ham at Upton Park yet again. There are quite a few Chelsea and Man United players who could win this award whilst Andrei Arshavin also showed his class at Fratton Park in more ways than one but it's your vote.

Worst Opposition Player

There are a few to choose from here. For over £32 million you'd have expected Robinho to do something at Fratton Park but he just as well not even have turned up. Roman Pavlyuchenko and David Bentley were bad at Fratton Park as were many of the Sunderland team. It's hard to single one out but it's your call.

Best Away Fans At Fratton Park

Despote their poor teams, Stoke and Hull fans made themselves noticed at a ground where away support hasn't been great this season. United and Arsenal fans sang more than the odd audible song whilst Sunderland brought down a very good number for a Monday night so this award could be a tight one.

Worst Away Fans At Fratton Park

The usual suspects of Blackburn, Bolton, Fulham and Middlesbrough will all receive some votes no doubt along with some other poorly supported clubs so I expect this one to be close too.

Happy voting!
