The Fratton Faithful Awards 2008

Last updated : 24 May 2008 By Jim Bonner
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is that time again.

The Fratton Faithful Awards are here for the third year running and all Pompey fans will have the chance to vote on the best and the worst of Pompey this season.

I have trimmed the awards down a tad from last year to remove some of the more repetitive and ambigous categories but there are still three categories to vote in; Individual, Season and Opposition. There will also be some special awards following these that I'll announce later.

To vote, simply copy the "form" at the bottom of this page and then either send them to me via the "EMail the Editor" link at the bottom left of the homepage or use the allocated thread on the messageboard if you are a messageboard user by clicking here. Please only vote once per category!

So without further ado, here are the categories and the awards up for grabs:

INDIVIDUAL

Remember to only vote for one Pompey player only!

Player Of The Season

David James won this last year and is certainly in cotention to retain this award but the consistency of Sylvain Distin and Glen Johnson make them the main rivals to his crown. There are other candidates too, so it's up to you to decide who wins this prestigous honour.

Worst Player Of The Season

This one will be hard to vote for considering the team just finished in their highest ever league position for over 50 years and also won the FA Cup. However, the promise that David Nugent and John Utaka has not been delivered whilst Papa Bouba Diop have suffered the wrath of Pompey fans for a while too. It's your call.

Goal Of The Season

Although Matt Taylor hardly saw the light of day in a Pompey shirt there have still been some good goals scored. Utaka's breakway goal against Bolton was breathtaking, Noe Pamarot's screamer stunned everyone at Newcastle, Kranjcar's free kick at Birmingham was sublime and Muntari's two screamers against Villa are up there. Villa also succumbed to a technically brilliant lob by Jermain Defoe. I expect this award to be closely contested.

Miss Of The Season

Kanu hitting the post in the FA Cup Final is a definite contender for this as is John Utaka's horrendous miss against Ipswich. David Nugent has a few bad misses to his name whilst a few of our players missed penalties too. I'm sure I'm forgetting about one really awful miss but I'm struggling to remember it...

Save Of The Season

David James saved a few penalties this campaign which were vital and also produced many more stops to win us games. The last minute save at Bolton sticks in my mind but tipping Evra's effort onto the post at Old Trafford and the now infamous "Afro Save" from Michael Owen are also memorable. There are plenty to choose from in this category so good luck!

Gaffe Of The Season

There have been a few individual gaffes this season that the people involved won't want to remember. Jamo rushing out into the right back position against Dave Kitson is something he'll want to forget as is the goal he let in against Frank Lampard. I'm sure there are others too, so get those memories working!

SEASON AWARDS

Moment Of The Season

I'm sure winning the FA Cup will win this but was there any particular moment during that run that really stood out, such as Muntari's penalty at Old Trafford or one of Kanu's winners at Wembley?

Worst Moment Of The Season

Did seeing heroes such as Gary O'Neil, Matty Taylor or Benjani make you cry? Were you unimpressed at the booing at the end of one of a few poor results at Fratton Park or were you rather annoyed at the treatment of Harry Redknapp this season? It's up to you to decide....

Performance Of The Season

The 7-4 game against Reading is obviously going to stand out but there were some other very good performances against Chelsea and Villa at Fratton Park. Of course, there have been some superb displays away from home too whether it be the gutsy showing at Old Trafford in the cup or any of our nine away wins in the league.

Worst Performance Of The Season

There are a fair few "performances" up for this award. The 1-0 defeats at home to Tottenham and Middlesbrough were absolutely awful and despite our good record away from home there were still a few signs of the away day showings of Premier League years gone by with horrendous displays at Middlesbrough and Sunderland in particular.

Comedy Moment Of The Season

Roger Higgins, hang your head in shame after saying "Please welcome Manchester City and Portsmouth!" even though we were playing Everton. Those of you sitting in the Fratton End for the Tottenham game may have seen Paul Robinson's response to our "England's number two" chant as he mouthed "No" and stuck three fingers up and said "I'm number three!" Quality! But what was your favourite funny moment?

OPPOSITION

Best Opposition Team

This award can go to a team that were decent against us both home and away or were outstanding in one of our league games. Arsenal and Liverpool really did tank us at their home grounds whilst Middlesbrough and Tottenham did the double over us. Everton and Man City were also pretty good but it's your choice.

Worst Opposition Team

Again, this award can go to a team who were awful in both games or were truly woeful in one. For a team who finished higher than us, I was surprised how easy we beat Villa home and away. Reading conceded 9 in two games against us and we also doubled Birmingham, Bolton and Wigan. Newcastle were beaten after 10 minutes at St. James' Park so perhaps they get your vote?

Best Opposition Player

There have been a fair few players who tormented Pompey this season. Fernando Torres ripped us apart at Anfield, Cristiano Ronaldo scored one of the best free kicks ever against us, Nicolas Anelka scored twice at Fratton Park for two different clubs whilst Richard Dunne and Joleon Lescott were irritatingly hard to get past. Who gets your vote?

Worst Opposition Player

Scott Carson put in one of the worst goalkeeping performances I have seen in a long time at Fratton Park, whilst Liam Ridgewell and any of Reading's defenders could be up for this dubious honour. Claudio Cacapa was so bad that he was subbed off during the first quarter of the game at St. James' Park whilst Matt Taylor could also be on this list after his two hilarious misses at the Reebok earlier this year!

Best Away Fans At Fratton Park

Who were you particularly impressed with when they came down to Fratton Park? Fulham's following were excellent whilst Derby, Plymouth, Sunderland and Reading's fans were a credit to their club. The United fans also created a good atmosphere but the final decision rests with you.

Worst Away Fans At Fratton Park

Which set of fans shouldn't have even bothered turning up at the home of the FA Cup? Bolton's small following were poor and I couldn't hear the Middlesbrough or Wigan fans very loudly either. But it's up to you.

The winners (and losers) will be announced next Saturday so you have until then to vote. Happy voting!
