The 2019 Promotion Race Page

Welcome to the 2019 League One Promotion Race page. This will detail the current standings in the division as five teams vye for two automatic promotion places as well as home advantage against weaker opposition in the play-offs.

This page also contains a form guide and the remaining fixtures for the rest of the season so you can make your own calculations as to who finishes in the top two and who has to make do with the lottery of the play-offs.

Here are the current standings:

1st: Luton Town - 87pts (+44)

The Hatters are currently seven points clear of Pompey having played a game more. Their run-in is fairly easy on paper and you would have to back Luton to see the job through and get promoted despite their defeat to Charlton.

However, it was only two years ago when Doncaster bottled it and allowed Pompey to snatch the title from them.

Current Form: WDWWDL (11 points from the last 18)

Remaining Fixtures

Accrington (A)

Wimbledon (H)

Burton (A)

Oxford (H)

2nd: Barnsley - 82pts (+37)

Barnsley's blip now means they have lost control of the promotion race and will be overtaken by Pompey if Kenny Jackett's men win all of their remaining games.

However, the Tykes arguably have the easiest run-in of all of the promotion contenders and currently occupy the second automatic promotion place.

Current Form: DDWDLW (9 points from the last 18)

Remaining Fixtures

Shrewsbury (H)

Plymouth (A)

Blackpool (H)

Bristol Rovers (A)

3rd: Sunderland - 80pts (+33)

The Black Cats are now level on points with Pompey after their defeat to Coventry and still face a difficult run-in with just five games remaining.

That match at the Stadium of Light looks like it could be a promotion decider.

Current Form: DWWWDL (11 points from the last 18)

Remaining Fixtures

Doncaster (H)

Peterborough (A)

Portsmouth (H)

Fleetwood (A)

Southend (A)

4th: Portsmouth - 80pts (+31)

Pompey have hit form at the right time going into the final stretch of the season and there is now a belief that automatic promotion can be achieved. If the Blues win their remaining five games, they will be promoted.

The remaining games are a mixed bag with banana skins against Burton, Coventry and Peterborough to come and the Sunderland game is massive. If goal difference plays a part, Kenny Jackett's men are going to need to deal out a couple of thrashings to be on par with the two teams above them.

Current Form: LWWWWW (15 points from the last 18)

Remaining Fixtures

Burton (A)

Coventry (H)

Sunderland (H)

Peterborough (A)

Accrington (H)

5th: Charlton Athletic - 79pts (+24)

The Addicks have an outside chance of gatecrashing the top two but will have to win all of their remaining games and hope the others drop points given that they have played a game more than Pompey and Sunderland.

However, given their brilliant record at Fratton Park and having doubled the Blues this season, Charlton are the team for Pompey to avoid in the play-offs if that is the case.

Current Form: WDWWWW (16 points from the last 18)

Remaining Fixtures

Oxford (A)

Scunthorpe (H)

Gillingham (A)

Rochdale (H)
