However, the signs were ominous when, within two minutes, Michael Owen had put the Merseysiders 1-0 up, Owen breaking through the defence to dispatch Steven Gerrard's pass.

This motivated Liverpool and Shaka Hislop put to the test with a good save from a Gerrard free kick, and Owen was unlucky when his shot skimmed the crossbar with fifteen minutes gone.

The onslaught continued with Emile Heskey showing more of his trademark finishing to ensure Portsmouth were still in with a shout, and as the second half commenced, Portsmouth slowly but surely began to get into the match.

In the 77th minute, Portsmouth were rewarded for their industry when substitute Matthew Taylor drilled home a shot to even the tie up and revitalise Pompey's FA Cup dream.

But still the work wasn't over - Antony Le Tellec almost won the game for 'Pool, his shot blazing over the crossbar. But Portsmouth hung on and will go into the hat for the Quarter Finals.

They will be joined by Arsenal, Man Utd, Tranmere, Sheffield Utd, Millwall, along with two other ties that couldn't be seperated this weekend - Fulham v West Ham and Brimingham v Sunderland.
