Taylor And Gardner Punish Embarrassing Pompey Defending

A 2-1 scoreline might suggest that it was a close game yesterday at the Reebok Stadium, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Bolton could easily have had more goals if it wasn't for a mixture of bad luck (on their part), a good save or some desperate defending. Not that it would have mattered as apart from a spell in the first half, Pompey were not a threat.

The writing was on the wall right from the start as Matty Taylor flicked the ball over Hermann Hreidarsson and volleyed into the net. His celebration was modest and respectful, though Kevin "Scummer" Davies was happy to gloat but what annoyed me most was that David James should have saved that shot.

Two minutes later and Ricardo Garnder doubled the lead following what could possibly be the worst defending I have ever seen. Jlloyd Samuel's long ball carved Pompey apart and Taylor flicked the ball into the centre of the box, nobody tracked Gardner's run as he smashed it into the net.

After that catastrophic start, Peter Crouch pulled one back after he headed in Niko Kranjcar's pinpoint cross and following that we put some pressure on the home side and if Jermain Defoe's control was better or if Jaaskelainen wasn't equal to Kranjcar's effort then we might have stolen an equaliser before half time.

On the other hand, Elmander blazed a shot over when put through and at the end of the half Pompey had Jamo and good fortune to thank as the England 'keeper tipped Gretar Steinsson's header onto the post and Gary Cahill missed the rebound.

Bolton dominated the second half as the Pompey defence continued to play like uneducated schoolboys. James was lucky that his sliced clearance did not lead to a goal whilst Kranjcar also stopped Davies' effort on the line.

What was worse was that the sheer lack of creativity of the Pompey midfield meant that the strikers had no service and so chances for us were kept to a minimum.

In fact, all the travelling contingent had to cheer in the second half was the return of Lassana Diarra who many thought we would never see play in a Pompey shirt again. He didn't change the game but at least he made an effort to applaud the Pompey fans after the game and show that he still gives a damn, even though his departure is imminent.

This defeat has really damaged our season and more questions are being asked about the manager. In his defence, the defensive problems began before Redknapp left us in the lurch and he was always going to be a tough act to follow.

The team he has inherited has been broken down by injuries and a severe lack of balance. Hreidarsson and Kranjcar played down the left whilst Pamarot and Diop played down the right yesterday. None of those players are natural wide men so that problem is something that needs serious attention in January.

But Adams does need to motivate the players because at the moment there seems to be too many players who look like they don't want to play for the manager or this club.

The game against West Ham on Boxing Day is now our biggest of the season. Failure to win that will confirm that Pompey join a relegation battle that nobody expected at the start of the season.
