South African Success For Pompey

Last updated : 30 July 2008 By Jim Bonner
A goal each from Jermain Defoe and Pedro Mendes were enough to beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 at the home team's training ground.

It didn't take long for Pompey to open the scoring as on 14 minutes Jermain Defoe lobbed Ajax goalkeeper Sean Roberts after being played in by Niko Kranjcar.

Four minutes later Pedro Mendes unleashed one of his trademark long range curlers from 25 yards out to double Pompey's advantage.

Defoe almost lobbed Roberts again only to see his effort go wide from a tight angle whilst Ben Sahar also went close in the second half and Niko Kranjcar placed his free kick narrowly off target.

Dipsy Selolwane pulled one back for the hosts but Pompey held out for the win. Perhaps the best piece of news to come from this friendly is that Lassana Diarra played the full 90 minutes, which should quell any rumours of him being sold (at least for the time being anyway).

The squad will now return home for the next friendly with Oxford United on Monday and hopefully there will be one or two new additions by then.
