Redknapp: I Will Stay

Last updated : 19 February 2006 By Jim Bonner
Harry Redknapp has today said in the Sunday Mirror that he will stay at Portsmouth even if we get relegated. Now in the column I wrote when Redknapp returned to us I said I strongly doubted he would stay on should we get relegated and I still stand by that for everyone knows that Harry is, to put it bluntly, a serial bullshitter. To pick out some of his quotes from the interview taken from the Sunday Mirror:

"I will take full responsibility if we go down"

Translation: "It won't be anything to do with me if we're relegated. It'll all be that Perrin guy's fault and his signings. That Priske is useless.."

"I will bring the club back up or die trying if I'm allowed to"

Translation: "I will bring the club back up or die trying until a better job comes along in the Premier. Then I'm off.."

"If people think I'm going looking for excuses they don't know me"

Translation: "Harry Redknapp's book of 1001 Football Excuses: Out Next Monday"

"Nothing will give me greater pleasure if I could keep this club up"

Translation: "Nothing will give me greater pleasure than phoning Alain Perrin on the final day and saying "you were wrong" and then telling all the Pompey fans that I've singlehandedly saved the club again. Then they can build a statue of me outside the new Fratton Park (just don't expect it until 2010)"

OK now you can criticise me for not backing the manager based on this article but any regular reader of this site would know I have said there's no point in sacking Redknapp now as then our survival hopes would go from silm down to nothing. However I don't believe a word he says and I certainly don't trust him judging from his past antics and lies. If he does stick with us if we go down then I'll take all of this back but I'm not expecting anything.

Whatever happens I hope everyone still backs the team no matter what happens. Harry Redknapp isn't the club despite what the media and he himself would tell you. By the end of the year we should know the truth of his statement though. Whether the board or fans would want him to stay is a totally different matter altogether however...
