Proud Pompey Take Turf Moor Victory

Last updated : 28 February 2010 By Jim Bonner
It has been a while since I enjoyed a football match as much as I did yesterday at Turf Moor.

With relegation a certainty, the players showed true professionalism and without any pressure, played an attacking game that was good to see after what has been a terrible week in the history of Portsmouth Football Club.

Avram Grant went with three up front and it paid dividends against Burnley's nervous defence who struggled with the pace of Piquionne and Webber all game.

Pompey were the better side for virtually the entire game and had a goal chalked off after Webber had tapped in from a well-worked short corner but did take the lead when Webber's skewed shot was turned in by Piquionne for a deserved lead.

It took a spectacular equaliser to bring the Clarets level as Martin Paterson instinctively chipped the ball over a stranded David James but we were unlucky not to take the lead again when O'Hara's shot rattled the crossbar.

Brian Laws' men could only improve after the break and they did, as Pompey breathed a heavy sigh of relief after Fletcher put his free header over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

But Portsmouth were gifted an opportunity to re-take the lead after Clarke Carlisle took out Piquionne in the box to give away a penalty. Unfortunately O'Hara's poor spot kick was saved by Brian Jensen but I always felt that we would still have opportunities to win the game.

And the winner did come following another piece of comical defending from Carlisle. With the ball at his feet, he was unaware that Utaka was lurking and the Nigerian took the ball off him, only to be fouled by the Burnley skipper.

Mark Clattenburg had no choice but to award the penalty and this time Hassan Yebda got the job done from twelve yards to put Pompey ahead once again.

The home side piled on the pressure late on and Ricardo Rocha was sent off for two obstruction offences, having had no need to commit the first one with Finnan covering.

But the defence held firm and Pompey had completed the double over Burnley. The points tally has gone up to 19 ahead of the pending 9 point deduction but all I care about is the fact we won a good game of football and both the players and Avram Grant, who jumped he barriers and got mobbed by grateful Pompey fans, still care despite all the circumstances.

So, that's one win down. Just another nine to go.
