Press round-up

The Guardian:
Matt Jansen's goal, and a little luck, were the main factors in securing Mark Hughes his first Premiership victory. Yet had Aiyegbeni Yakubu buried a glorious chance at the other end minutes earlier, as he should have done after turning Dominic Matteo to give himself a clear sight of goal, Blackburn might still have been winless with few complaints.

The Times:

Though Mark Hughes is grizzled, nothing of his career has been grey. Yesterday, though, looked like being the exception: more the yawn of a new era than the dawn, as Blackburn laboured their way through more than 70 minutes of Hughes's first match as the new manager at Ewood Park.

The Sun:
Substitute Matt Jansen's late cracker left new boss Mark Hughes celebrating Blackburn's first victory of the season. That was a touch harsh on a Portsmouth side whose defence often looked comfortable.

BBC Online:
Matt Jansen got Mark Hughes's managerial reign at Blackburn off to a winning start against Portsmouth. Jansen came off the bench to fire in a 75th minute winner, turning sharply to rifle home from 12 yards as Portsmouth's defence backed off. Referee Mark Clattenberg angered Pompey when he booked Fuller for diving when he appeared to be shoved over by Friedel in the penalty area.

ESPN:
Matt Jansen came off the bench to ensure new manager Mark Hughes got his managerial career at Blackburn off to a winning start against Portsmouth with a 1-0 victory. The 26 year-old-striker has endured a terrible two years since a motor scooter accident left him badly injured.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
Harry, wondering how Fuller was meant to stay on his feet when 6ft 4in, 15st keeper Friedel barged into his back:
"Is he supposed to be Superman or something?"
