Portsmouth's guide to the Premiership part Two

Last updated : 13 August 2003 By Alex Dale
Charlton Athletic

Last Season: 12th

In: di Canio (West Ham), Holland (Ipswich Town), Hreidarsson (Ipswich Town), Royce (Leicester)
Out: Blomqvist (Djurgarden), Dincer (Released), El Khalej (Released), Mustoe (Sheffield Wed), Roberts (Brighton), Robinson (Cardiff City), Robson (Released), Sharland (Released), Snodin (Released)

Charlton faded away badly after an excellent start which had Addick fans dreaming of European football. Charlton have a settled side which works well for each other, but Alan Curbishley has taken a massive gamble with disruptive yet talented forward Paulo di Canio. If di Canio affects morale, the Addicks could sink towards trouble.
Key Player: Scott Parker (M) former McDonalds posterboy adds flair to a workmanlike team.

Chelsea

Last Season: 4th

In: Ambrosio (Chievo), Bridge (Southampton), J Cole (West Ham), Duff (Chelsea), Geremi (Real Madrid), Johnson (West Ham), Macho (Sunderland), Makalamby (PSV Edinhoven), Veron (Man Utd)
Out: Ambrosetti (Released), de Goey (Stoke), Evans (Swindon), Ferrer (Released), Le Saux (Southampton), Morris (Leeds), Ross (Partick Thistle), Wooleaston (Bradford City), Zola (Cagliari)

Roman Abramovich has transformed a Chelsea side that only qualified for the Champions League with a last day win over Liverpool to one with serious title ambitions. Money has been no object for Chelsea, but Ranieri's position as manager is tenuous and for so many players to gel and win the league at the first attempt would be quite some effort.
Key Player: Marcel Desailly (D) has agreed to stay and the team will rely on his experience.

Everton
Last Season: 7th

In: Tie (Liaoning), Yobo (Paris St Germain)
Out: Beck (Released), Carney (Released), Pilkington (Port Vale), Rodrigo (Released), Southern (Released)

More or less the same team which exceeded expectations last time out, the Toffees will once again look to Wayne Rooney for inspiration. But, without the surprise factor, Everton may struggle to repeat last season's form. Alex Nyarko looks to be staying and could be a feather in the cap of David Moyes if he plays to his ability.
Key Player: Tomasz Radzinski (F) Everton can't rely on a 17 year old for all their goals and Radzinski will have to be on top form to ensure Rooney gets the support he needs to shoot Everton up the table.

Fulham

Last Season: 14th

In: Beasant (Brighton), Bonnissel (Glasgow Rangers), Buari (Free Transfer), Green (Free Transfer)
Out: Collins (Released), Cornwall (Bradford City), Finnan (Liverpool), Goldbaek (Released), Shelvel (Released)

If you thought 27 year old Chris Brass had a rough time ahead as York City manager, spare a thought for 32 year old Chris Coleman, thrown in at the deep end trying to steer Fulham to safety. Results did improve as Fulham neared self destruct under Jean Tigana last Spring, but Coleman's first full season will be a massive test. For Fulham to come all this way to return to Division One would be a shame.
Key Player: Steed Malbranque (M) Sean Davies is unsettled so last season's top scorer will have to continue supplying the goods in midfield.

Leeds United

In: Morris (Chelsea)
Out: Burns (Released), Candsell-Sherriff (Aarhus), Dacourt (Roma), Kewell (Liverpool), Newey (Leyton Orient)

The exodus continues and Leeds looks a shell of the team that made the Champions League Semis three years ago. Star goalkeeper Paul Robinson and forward Mark Viduka are also rumoured to be off, but even if they do go, talks of relegation seem unfounded. Leeds will find theselves stretched and a top ten finish is unlikely, but free of injury have a team capable of testing anyone.
Key Player: Michael Bridges (F) Leeds' rich strikeforce of last year is a distant memory and Bridges will have to stand up and be counted this term.

Tomorrow: Leicester-Middlesbrough!
