Portsmouth vs Sunderland Preview

Last updated : 17 May 2009 By Jim Bonner
Exactly one year ago the majority of Pompey fans were celebrating the greatest triumph they had ever seen as Sol Campbell lifted the FA Cup at Wembley. How things change in a year...

We spent some money but to balance the books we sold key players during the summer, then our manager walked out on us (again) to be replaced by his assistant who wasn't up to the job.

Then our owner declared that he wasn't putting any more money into the club which meant selling our two best players in January, then replacing the inept manager with the academy director after capitulating to Liverpool after many more late goals had been conceded during the season.

Yet, despite all of that we still survived (mainly due to the utter tripe below us) and we're safe in the knowledge that we'll be playing in the Premier League next season. The same cannot be said for our opponents tomorrow.

Sunderland have fallen into the relegation battle under Ricky Sbragia and need a win at Fratton Park tomorrow to avoid a nervous final day at home to Chelsea next Sunday.

Now that Pompey are safe the big talking point will be who will be playing their final game as a Pompey player at Fratton Park. It will probably be the last time we see Sol Campbell in the royal blue shirt whilst there will be continued speculation about the likes of Johnson, Distin, Hreidarsson, Pennant, Kanu and Crouch too.

Pompey fans will also be hoping that Paul Hart selects a more attacking line up now that safety is certain. We don't want to see a cautious approach against a team that haven't won away from home in 10 games and I'd also like to see Basinas given a chance and maybe even Gekas too.

Armand Traore has recovered from an injury and may also be given a Fratton Park farewell before he returns to Arsenal. Noe Pamarot is also back from suspension.

Ricky Sbragia may select the same side that went to the Reebok and held Bolton to a 0-0 draw last week which would mean Kenwyne Jones playing up top on his own with Djibril Cisse on the bench.

Jones should receive support from Kieran Richardson and Steed Malbranque on the flanks and Craig Gordon is still out so Marton Fulop will keep goal for the Black Cats.

After the woeful performance at Blackburn last week I expect a response against a poor Sunderland team and if we can get the win and then go on and beat Wigan next Sunday we can actually finish in a respectable position despite all what has gone on during our FA Cup win last year.

So lets see off the season on a high note and hope that next season will be more positive if (or when, if what Storrie says is anything to go by) we find a new owner.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Draw (1-1)
Soccernet: Draw

My Prediction: With the shackles of relegation removed I hope (but not expect) Paul Hart to pick a more attacking team. If he does then I think we'll win but I expect this to be an uneventful draw given both teams' recent scoring problems.
