Portsmouth vs Manchester City Preview

Forget the plans you may have with your partner tomorrow, our only true love is calling on Valentines Day and we all must be at Fratton Park for the only date that matters tomorrow.

Yes, our relationship has been strained at best during the past year with disputes over finance, disloyal adultery and borderline domestic abuse threatening to end the time we've had together but tomorrow there is a chance that things can be worked out with a good performance and an end result.

Manchester City visit Fratton Park with just one away win all season despite all their riches and many Pompey fans will believe that this is the perfect opportunity to earn that vital win that would take us to 14th in the league where we could breathe easier before another vital encounter at Stoke.

Paul Hart probably never envisaged that he would take charge of the first team when he joined the club but it is he who must pick the team that is going to beat Mark Hughes' side tomorrow.

He has Jermaine Pennant available again after he was banned from playing against his parent club and has no other fresh injury worries to contend with. Supposed wantaway Niko Kranjcar could be handed his first start since returning from injury if Hart decides to drop Belhadj or Hreidarsson.

Pompey fans will be cursing the weather as when this game was originally supposed to be played City had injuries aplenty and did not have two players who always seem to play well against Pompey.

Shay Given always seems to save almost everything the blues have to throw at him at Fratton Park whilst Craig Bellamy was the chief architect of West Ham's 4-1 Boxing Day triumph having torn the Pompey defence to pieces and scoring two goals.

The good news is that Shaun Wright-Phillips, another player who always seems to do some damage to us, is suspended along with Richard Dunne whilst Benjani can't return to haunt us as he is injured.

The biggest news of the day will be that David James will surpass Gary Speed's Premier League appearance record against one of his former clubs and will set a new record of 535 appearances since his first showing for Liverpool in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in 1992.

Former players are usually outstanding or have a mare against their past employers so lets hope that Jamo celebrates his new record with a clean sheet.

Speaking of former players up against their old team brings me to Sylvain Distin. The Frenchman is currently having a torrid time and needs to shut up, get his head down and stop making costly mistakes because you can bet that Robinho and co. will punish any error he or any other individual is responsible for.

City's last league victory away from Eastlands came at Sunderland back in August and so that will fill fans with hope. If we can build on our last two home performances that have warranted more than the two defeats that resulted from those games then we've got a good chance of winning our first league game in ten.

But now that Adams has gone can the defence buck up their ideas and make us a difficult team to beat? If not, I fear another home defeat that will really make us wonder if Pompey's stint in the Premier League is a long-term relationship or just an affair built on extremely shaky foundations.

My Prediction: If we can't beat a team that hasn't won away from home in the good part of half a year then we'll probably be playing Championship football next season. We simply have to win...
