Portsmouth vs Liverpool Preview

Last updated : 06 February 2009 By Jim Bonner
Alan Curbishl... *ahem* Tony Adams' Portsmouth side welcome Liverpool to Fratton Park in a bid to claim a first home point since the 3-2 win over Blackburn on November 30th.

The view amongst most Pompey fans is that there will not be a better time to play the Reds with Steven Gerrard out injured, Fernando Torres not fully fit and the fact that they played 120 minutes at Everton on Wednesday where they lost to a late goal that nobody saw thanks to ITV's incompetence.

That doesn't mean to say this will be an easy game, especially given our current woeful form and the fact that we've only scored one goal at home since our last win, so I've got no idea how we're supposed to break down one of the toughest defences in the league.

Jermaine Pennant can't play against his parent club so it is likely that John Utaka will take his place whilst Armand Traore is also a doubt so the returning Nadir Belhadj will replace him.

Sol Campbell also returns from injury to replace Younes Kaboul who limped out of the defeat against Fulham last week, whilst Adams has said David Nugent will start meaning Theofanis Gekas will start his Pompey career on the bench but Greek compatriot Angelos Basinas should go straight into the first team.

The bad news for us is that Lucas Leiva, one of the worst players to wear a Liverpool shirt, is banned and so a much better player in Javier Mascherano will take his place whilst Xabi Alonso will fill in for Gerrard.

I won't even bother trying to guess the team Rafael Benitez will select but it has been hinted that he'll go 4-4-2 with Kuyt partnering Torres although it's possible that he'll play 4-5-1 which would make for an utterly boring game.

But then we have the ex-factor and I'm sure Peter Crouch will be dying to end his goalscoring drought in the league with a goal against his former employers whilst David James will also be facing his former club.

I'm not expecting much from this game in all honesty. I'm interested to see how the new signings cope against a top quality side but I don't think we have enough to break down a stubborn Liverpool defence and we're making too many mistakes at the back to warrant me predicting that we'll keep a clean sheet.

Still, stranger things have happened...

Kanu's tamely struck penalty gifted Jose Reina one of the easier spot kick saves in his career in a tightly contested game of few chances, though John Utaka did miss a great opportunity in the second half.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Draw (1-1)
Sky Sports: Away Win (0-1)
Soccernet: Draw

My Prediction: We're simply not good enough at the moment and we can only hope that the Everton defeat has demoralised a Liverpool side without their inspirational captain. It'll be tight but I can see them getting a jammy winner in a scrappy contest.
