Portsmouth vs Bolton Preview

Last updated : 17 April 2009 By Jim Bonner
Matthew Taylor will return to Fratton Park as an opposition player for the first time with a Bolton Wanderers side that aren't clear of relegation themselves.

Many Pompey fans have fond memories of "Super Matt" thanks to his fantastic long range specials and his commitment on the pitch but the main focus will be the three extremely important points available tomorrow.

After this game Pompey travel to Old Trafford then St. James' Park and then have a home game with Arsenal. That run can end up in three straight defeats so we really do have to beat Bolton after failing to beat West Brom last week.

Bolton still have relegation worries themselves but Gary Megson's team will know that a victory will take them to the magical 40 point mark which should see them stay in the Premier League.

Glen Johnson will return to the side and replace Younes Kaboul at right back following his suspension whilst Sean Davis may be fit enough to replace Richard Hughes and restore a bit of quality to the centre of the park.

Bolton are likely to stick with a similar side that were so close to finishing one of the greatest ever comebacks in league history at Stamford Bridge, clawing their way back from 4-0 down to a 4-3 scoreline.

They also have one of the best strikers in the league in Kevin "Scummer" Davies who is going to be difficult to contain but also have another quality striker in Johan Elmander to partner him should Megson feel the need.

And whilst all eyes will be on Matty tomorrow you can't forget that Andy O'Brien is another former Pompey player along with Taylor to play against his former club tomorrow.

You know what you're getting when you're playing Bolton. They work hard, they play direct football that isn't easy on the eye but it's effective and with Pompey playing in a similar way to get out of trouble I can't see this one being a classic.

But I won't care how this one looks on the eye because only the result matters at this stage of the season.

Last Time: Pompey 3 Bolton Wanderers 1

Nicolas Anelka gave the Trotters an early lead after slotting past David James but it didn't last long as Kanu equalised. John Utaka then scored an excellent solo goal after running half the pitch and leaving the Bolton defenders in his trail to score.

Kanu was brought down late in the game and Matty Taylor scored the resulting penalty which would be his final goal for the club against his current employers.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Home Win (2-1)
Sky Sports: Draw (1-1)
Soccernet: Draw

My Prediction: It will be tense and tight but certainly not one for the purists. There could be plenty of drama as both sides need the win, but we need it just that little bit more.
