Pompey Win At The Kassam

Goals from Papa Bouba Diop and Jermain Defoe were enough to defeat BlueSquare Premier League outfit Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

Harry Redknapp fielded a strongish looking side as James, Lauren, Cranie, Distin, Traore, Diop, Diarra, Mendes, Kranjcar, Defoe and Crouch all took to the field.

Pompey dominated the majority of the first half as both Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch forced decent saves from Oxford 'keeper Ben Hinchliffe. The home side did concede after Djimi Traore produced a great cross into the box and the crowd witnessed a miracle as Papa Bouba Diop finally scored for the blues!

David James was called into action a couple of times but Pompey doubled the lead after some good build up play led to Defoe chipping Hinchliffe just before half time.

The second half was a dull affair with barely any talking points. A couple of trialists took part late on and Lassana Diarra withdrew with cramp.

Later on in the half Defoe reacted angrily to a late challenge and took a swing at the Oxford player with his boot which may have resulted in a straight red card in a competitive match. However, the referee didn't send him off and the England striker escaped a possible suspension.

Papa Bouba Diop almost got a second after some great set-up play by Peter Crouch but it was the home side that pulled one back in the final minute when Alex Fisher took advantage of poor marking by trialist Manuel Rodriguez and converted a right wing cross.

A different Pompey side will be at Westleigh Park tomorrow for another friendly. 7:45 kick-off with tickets at £15 for adults and £10 for concessions.
