Pompey vs Wigan Preview

Last updated : 28 March 2008 By Jim Bonner
Now that the ticket fiasco has died down, Pompey fans will be more focused on what might be an equally important game at home to Wigan Athletic tomorrow.

There's still a small chance of taking fifth place in the league with Everton seven points above us, whilst Steve Bruce's side are still scrapping to avoid relegation. It looks like both sides will go into the game with weakened sides due to injuries and suspensions though.

Papa Bouba Diop and Sulley Muntari serve the second game of their suspensions, Lassana Diarra is being wrapped up in cotton wool so he'll hopefully be fit for Wembley whilst there are also doubts over the fitness of Hermann Hreidarsson and Lucien Aubey. Sol Campbell and Lauren will return to the team though, so that's good news.

It's also been hinted that Niko Kranjcar will be rested after playing against Scotland in midweek but I think he will play because otherwise our midfield will be left very unbalanced.

Tomorrow's game will represent the chance for some of our squad players to stake a claim in the semi-final team. Sean Davis, worried that his Pompey days are numbered, is sure to play tomorrow but must be careful as if he is booked then he'll miss the trip to Wembley.

The likes of Sean Davis, John Utaka, Pedro Mendes, Lauren and Richard Hughes will all want to prove they are worthy of playing in our biggest game in 16 years, which makes me think that Wigan won't have it as easy as some Pompey fans think.

Our opponents have their own suspension and injury problems too. Erik Edman is out for six months whilst Jason Koumas, Michael Brown and Wilson Palacios are all suspended so Bruce will have to shuffle his pack.

Harry Redknapp has once again stated his fear about Emile Heskey. He seems to do it every season but from what I can remember, he's never scored against us and has rarely made any sort of impact when playing for either Liverpool or Birmingham.

Wigan are a much better side than the one we beat at the JJB earlier on in the season. Bruce has made them hard to beat and with one eye on the cup and lack of a full strength side, I think the determination of the Latics might see them pick up a point and end any hopes we have of qualifying for Europe via the league.

The main thing is that we don't pick up any injuries to key players before next week, but maybe our squad players will make a point to Redknapp and make a statement at Fratton Park tomorrow.
