Pompey vs Tottenham Preview

Last updated : 31 December 2006 By Jim Bonner
Pompey begin 2007 by welcoming travelsick Tottenham Hotspur to Fratton Park. Spurs have only won once on the road all season whilst we have only lost once at home this campaign. So it should be a straightforward home win, right?

Even more good news for us is that their star centre back; Ledley King will be missing through injury. King has always been a pain in the arse against us, so it's good to know he should be absent. In his place should be the rather inept Calum Davenport.

Robbie Keane and Jermaie Jenas are also sidelined meaning villain of the year Didier Zokora is going to find out what it feels like to be abused for 90 minutes. Aaron Lennon could also miss out but Dimitar Berbatov should start alongside Jermain Defoe.

Harry is likely to start Kanu but it's a question of whether Benjani or goalscorer Andy Cole partners him. The former is still an injury doubt whilst the latter might not work well with Kanu, although I think it could be an interesting partnership.

There's no info on whether Pedro Mendes will return to the side or not. He didn't feature in the 16 yesterday but I assume he was rested so he could have a better chance of making an impact against his former club tomorrow. Manuel Fernandes won't even be included in the squad so not to trigger his stupid sign-on contract clause.

The New Year brings new expectation. At the start of the season I would happily have taken 12th if it was offered to me. However, after not dropping out of the top 6 all season I'd be disappointed if we didn't finish there, or at least make a good go of it.

Victory over Tottenham will give us a 7 point gap between the two sides. Defeat would leave us 6th but Spurs would then be breathing down our necks and Everton would also fancy their chances of overtaking us.

I think we'll win so long as the defence buck their ideas up after yesterdays disappointing performance. Berbatov and Defoe have been on fire lately so the back five will need to be at their best to keep a clean sheet. We have no problems scoring having netted twice in each of our last six matches and I'm sure we'll find the net again tomorrow.

2006 was a great year for the club but who knows? Maybe 2007 will be even better!

Happy New Year to everyone who reads Fratton Faithful!

Premiership Past: Pompey vs Tottenham Hotspur

03/04: Pompey 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0

Harry cancelled Christmas before this Boxing Day fixture and Pompey responded as two Patrik Berger free kicks made sure of the victory that got us out of the bottom three whilst dumping Spurs in the relegation zone.

04/05: Pompey 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0

A close range header from Yakubu was enough to settle this rather dull affair.

05/06: Pompey 0 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Spurs claimed their first win at Fratton Park for donkeys years on the opening day of last season. Alain Perrin's new faces lost after an Andy Griffin own goal and Jermain Defoe's second half strike.
