Pompey vs Manchester United Preview

Last updated : 15 August 2007 By Jim Bonner
A newly renovated Fratton Park welcomes the Champions as Pompey begin their home campaign against the side that they've beaten three times in four seasons at home. Can we make it a fourth time out of five?

The season has only just begun and United are already in somewhat of a "crisis" having dropped two points at home to Reading on Sunday and losing Wayne Rooney for two months. Carlos Tevez has been forced to make his debut early with Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also injured.

United also have problems in defence with Silvestre struggling, Gary Neville out and Gabriel Heinze not playing because his future is in doubt. So it looks like United could well be for the taking once again.

We have a few injury doubts of our own though. Sol Campbell and Pedro Mendes both have groin injuries that need to be assessed. If they fail to pass their medical checks they could make way for Noe Pamarot and Sean Davis who otherwise may drop to the bench with Matt Taylor returning on the left and Muntari being moved infield.

The better news is that Gary O'Neil should have recovered from his ankle problem and could feature. Reports suggest that Harry may play five in midfield and give Kanu a start as he looks to rotate his strikers but I would expect a 4-4-2 and Benjani to start up front with Nugent.

As for the game, we're really going to have to improve at the back from Saturday's showing otherwise Ronaldo is going to rip us apart. Hopefully Taylor will start and give much needed cover to Hermann who was constantly exposed against Derby.

The United line up will be nowhere near as strong as what it can be so we need to take advantage of that and do our usual hustling at home that seems to unsettle the big clubs. John Utaka could have a field day if we can pen Fergie's men in but I think we all know that the task tomorrow is more difficult than some pundits are predicting (most think we'll win!)

Still, we're more than capable of beating the Champions so let's hope that we stick it to 'em once again and claim another historic scalp!

As if you needed reminding, but in case you have the memory of a goldfish.

Benjani's shot is parried by Van Der Sar straight into Matt Taylor's path who slots in the opener. United come forward but Rooney is stopped twice by an outstanding tackle in the box in each half by Linvoy.

Rio Ferdinand then scores a comical own goal by passing the ball past the United 'keeper and seemingly making the game safe. However, Jamo let O'Shea score in stoppage time setting up a nervy ending where he had to make a last minute save from Alan Smith to win the game for Pompey.
