Pompey vs Chelsea Preview

Last updated : 02 March 2007 By Jim Bonner
The Champions visit Fratton Park tomorrow hoping to close the gap on Manchester United to face an out-of-form and injury ravaged Pompey side. Anyone who was optimistic about this game probably isn't so much now!

Chelsea need no introduction whatsoever. We know how much they've spent and the rewards gained from it. Drogba is in the form of his life and could have been a Pompey player once and he will take some stopping.

The only shred of hope we have is that stalwart John Terry is rated doubtful, but you can never write him off and I wouldn't be surprised to see him play tomorrow. Joe Cole and Khalid Boulahrouz won't feature but then these players are easily replaced at a club with the strength in depth Chelsea have.

Pompey have been dealt a major injury blow as Pedro Mendes has had surgery and looks to miss a good chunk of the season. Richard Hughes is likely to make a start with Gary O'Neil and Sean Davis also injury doubts.

Glen Johnson can't play against his parent club and Lauren is still injured meaning Noe Pamarot will fill in at right back. He got torn apart by Robben in the reverse fixture but he's come a long way since then and hopefully this game will be a lot different.

If lack of motivation and being in the "comfort zone" is what is causing our slump then this could be a blessing in disguise for us as we are bound to raise our game against such a good team as Chelsea. The away side have always beaten us 2-0 in the Premiership in this fixture so it's time for that to change.

We've got nothing to lose in this one. There's no burden of expectation because everyone expects us to lose so we should just get at them from the start and put last weeks abysmal result behind us.

We need a spark to get our season back and this game provides us with a huge opportunity, no matter how tough the opposition are.

Premiership Past: Pompey vs Chelsea

03/04: Pompey 0 Chelsea 2

Scott Parker scored his first goal for Chelsea and Hernan Crespo tucked away Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's shot that hit the crossbar to make sure Claudio Ranieri's men strolled to an easy victory. This was our last home defeat of that season strangely enough.

04/05: Pompey 0 Chelsea 2

Chelsea found it much tougher this time when we were under Velimir Zajec's reign and we looked to have done enough to hold on for a point but Arjen Robben broke Pompey hearts with a deflected late winner. Joe Cole scored in stoppage time to give the scoreline a far more flattering look to it.

05/06: Pompey 0 Chelsea 2

Joe Cole was the boo boy as Joe Jordan's Pompey side were easily beaten again after Cole was fouled in the area and Lampard scored the resulting penalty to seal the win. Hernan Crespo had put Mourinho's side in front with an early poach.
