Pompey vs Cardiff: FA Cup Final Preview

Last updated : 16 May 2008 By Jim Bonner
1939 - World War II is declared, the Spanish Civil War ends, Siam changes its name to Thailand, Portsmouth Football Club win the FA Cup.

Not many Pompey fans will remember or even recognise such names as Bert Barlow, Jock Anderson, Cliff Barker, Jimmy Guthrie and Jack Tinn who were instrumental in that 1939 success. But for those who do, these men represent Pompey legends who have written themselves into the history of this club forever.

The result that day was a shock as Wolverhampton Wanderers were one of the biggest clubs in England and were much fancied to win, yet suffered a hammering at the hands of Jack Tinn's side.

69 years later and the tables are turned as it will be Cardiff who are the underdogs, though tomorrow will be an opportunity for everyone in a blue shirt to become a Pompey legend in their own right.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who couldn't concentrate at work today. All I've been thinking about is what it would mean to me, every other Pompey fan and the city itself if Harry Redknapp's men are triumphant tomorrow.

Take a look at what's at stake. The glory of winning the oldest cup competition in the world, international recognition from people who have never heard of "Portsmouth Football Club" before, UEFA Cup football next season, a return to Wembley in August to play in the Community Shield and of course, even more bragging rights over the Scummers.

Harry Redknapp is almost certainly going to employ the 4-5-1 formation that has been so successful away from Fratton Park this season.

The back five should pick itself, Kanu will start up front whilst the midfield should comprise of the three big men in the centre and the two on the wings who could really do Cardiff some damage if they turn it on.

Dave Jones' men are likely to line up 4-4-2 with Hasselbaink and Parry starting up front and Ramsey and Fowler on the bench to call upon if needed. Joe Ledley and Peter Whittingham are dangerous on their day and so they will have to be watched very carefully.

Most people are expecting a tight, tense game that will be settled by a single goal but there hasn't really been much discussion of a thrashing. I would be overjoyed if we got an early goal and our midfield steamrollered theirs and we ended up winning at a canter.

I'm not expecting that given our form and I do wonder who is going to score for us. Can Kanu or Kranjcar come up with a piece of magic that will win us the game? Will Muntari and Diarra assert themselves and control the game and can our defence please, please stop conceding from set-pieces as the Bluebirds have players capable of good deliveries and punishing poor marking, just ask Middlesbrough fans.

Past form will probably count for nothing and it will probably come down to nerves and who has the bottle to do something special, and there is no bigger stage to do it than the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

We could end up going to extra time and penalties and if the nerves haven't shredded by then, they will do once David James walks towards the goal and faces the spot kicks. I'm hoping that Jamo can save the penalties like he has done in the league this season and that our earlier penalty misses will not come back to haunt us.

It's so close now and I'll still pinch myself tomorrow as we approach Wembley once again. I hope all Pompey fans, wherever they have come from to watch the game, or if they are watching in pubs, on the common or in their homes that they enjoy the day.

Enjoy soaking up the pre-match atmosphere, enjoy Katherine Jenkins and Lesley Garrett singing Abide With Me and both National Anthems but most importantly, enjoy the game because this may be the only chance we get to experience such an occasion.

The build up is finally over. 731 teams entered this famous competition and now only two remain. You can guarantee that both sets of fans will be crying after the match but whether they be of joy or pain we won't know until tomorrow.

So, for the last time this season....

Head-To-Head

The two sides have never met in the FA Cup but the last meeting was in 2004 when Pompey went to Ninian Park and won 2-0 in a Carling Cup tie with Yakubu getting both of the goals.

The two sides have also never met in the league since I've been alive, with the last game between the two on the 23rd of March 1985 which is remembered for the infamous "clock theft" incident.

Pundit Watch

Most pundits are tipping Pompey to win because we're the Premier League side and we have a superior defence. However there are a couple of people, such as Jeff Stelling and Tony Cotee who think Cardiff will win.

I'm not making a prediction for this game. I'm just going to hope for the best.
