Pompey vs Bolton Preview

Last updated : 17 August 2007 By Jim Bonner
Pompey face a selection crisis with the possibility of only having 16 players available for the visit of "struggling" Bolton Wanderers.

Lauren, Sol Campbell, Linvoy Primus, Dejan Stefanovic and Noe Pamarot all look set to miss out, meaning our defence will be stretched to the very limit. Sulley Muntari is banned following his dismissal on Wednesday whilst there are also doubts over Pedro Mendes and Gary O'Neil. Niko Kranjcar is also still sidelined.

All those injury problems should mean that Matty Taylor gets his first start of the season whilst David Nugent will be hoping to grab his first Pompey goal of the season against Sammy Lee's side who have lost their two opening games.

The Trotters could well field Andy O'Brien in tomorrow's early kick-off as well as Nicholas Anelka who will soon be a Pompey player (along with Nobby Solano) if you believe the newspapers. The good news is that Kevin "Scummer" Davies will miss out with a hamstring injury.

The main issue with this game is that it'll be the only game we'll be favourites for until late September when Reading visit Fratton Park. Prior to that we have away trips to Chelsea, Arsenal and Blackburn with a home clash against Liverpool in between, therefore it's vital that we pick up three points tomorrow as I don't see too many more on the horizon.

Although we are down to the bare bones, these bones are not as brittle as in previous seasons and the team should still be strong enough to beat Bolton. However, it looks likely that they will try and stifle the game so that they don't lose a third consecutive match.

It probably won't be a classic but the result is all that matters tomorrow as we really need to chalk up our first win of the season before those daunting away trips.
