Pompey vs Blackburn Preview

Last updated : 31 October 2007 By Jim Bonner
If Pompey want to progress to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup this season then they're going to have to beat one of the few teams that are currently above them in the league.

Following their last gasp win at Tottenham on Sunday, Rovers leaped Pompey in the table and still have a game in hand. Of course, this doesn't mean they're a better side than us as we're currently the only domestic team to beat them this season.

Harry Redknapp has pledged to play his strongest side available to give us the best chance against Mark Hughes who is also likely to deploy his strongest team at Fratton Park tomorrow.

This means that Sean Davis is likely to come in for Pedro Mendes from the side that drew with West Ham on Saturday but Sulley Muntari and Hermann Hreidarsson are both doubts and probably won't be risked ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

The Carling Cup is a good avenue to achieve qualification for the UEFA Cup and with both sides aiming for that at the end of the season, this game could be pivotal in deciding if either club will end up qualifying.

This is bound to be a tough match with fans of both clubs saying it could go either way and I'd have to agree with them. With home advantage you'd expect us to be favourites but our performance on Saturday was our worst at Fratton Park since January and we'll need to vastly improve on that if we're to progress.

Rovers have won their last six games so are on top form and with both sides so evenly matched, I think we could see extra time and maybe even a penalty shootout.

Let's just hope that the fans who paid the £25 to watch this match end up getting value for money.
