Pompey vs Blackburn Preview

Last updated : 07 April 2006 By Jim Bonner
After three wins in a row now is the time to seize a perfect oppurtunity to play our survival wild card. Starting with victory against Blackburn Rovers tommorow.

Tommorow begins a run of three home games in a week against Blackburn, Arsenal and Middlesbrough, this is of course unless the bad weather postpones our game tommorow and bad weather has been forecast for Saturday.

However it is not the doom or gloom that we should be focusing on now. The way Pompey have been playing has shown a considerable ray of light in our great escape from relegation with the defence showing improvement, the midfield proving their quality and dominance and the strikers as flamboyant as ever. However make no mistake about it, the task tommorow will not be easy.

Blackburn Rovers are chasing a Champions League spot and they are a much changed side from the band of thugs that bullied a win out of us at Fratton last season (though ironically it was two Pompey players who saw red that day). Blackburn know that they really need to win tommorow to retain any hope of 4th place alive and on top of that they have beaten us the last two times they have played us at Fratton Park, so make no mistake, they should not be under-estimated.

If you want some good news though, Blackburn have a poor away record having lost their last 4 away games before beating Sunderland last time out and they don't really count do they? They will be visiting a Fratton Park which I am hoping will contain the best atmosphere we have had this season. Will Harry's name be sung? It's likely though whatever happens I'm sure our support will shake the stands and give Blackburn a shock. It's always been proven that the louder our crowd is, the better Pompey seem to play so I'm sure the lads will put on a great display.

Harry is keeping his cards close to his chest as two or three players are slight doubts and will need fitness tests. I think Harry has said this because if he told the media which players weren't 100% then Hughes will be telling his troops which players should be targeted for "extra attention". Blackburn are the dirtiest side in the league for a reason however they have the extra creativity this time round with an improved Pedersen, Reid and Bellamy in their side. I believe Bellamy to be the key, and if our defence can stop him then we have a good chance of winning.

We're Pompey though therefore we are likely to concede however we have scored nine goals in our last three games so don't be stupid enough to bet on a 0-0 for this game, there will be goals! Let's just hope we score more of them...
