Pompey To Be Sold?

Pompey have denied that Sacha Gaydamak is looking to sell Portsmouth Football Club following a report from the News Of The World. However, the club have confirmed that they are willing to listen to serious offers should any be tabled.

The tabloid reported that Gaydamak was making a heavy loss with the club due to heavy wage bills and transfer fees that still had to be paid. The report also mentioned that he had become frustrated with the new stadium and training ground complex situation and values the club at £40 million.

The "investigation" by the paper continued with a so-called Fratton Park "insider" claiming that the club were £60 million in debt, predict a £25 million loss this year and only make £65 million a year to cover all costs which isn't nearly enough to stop the debt piling up.

Because of this, Sacha is allegedly looking to cut his losses by selling to a mega rich owner before January but if that doesn't happen then a fire sale could happen, meaning Pompey's most valuable players would have to be sold to prevent the club "doing a Leeds".

I must commend club officials for reassuring the fans with the official statement released on the same day as the report as there were some very worried faces in the Fratton End before kick-off on Sunday.

Harry Redknapp said after the game that Sacha personally told him that he doesn't have to sell any players during the January transfer window and I see no reason not to believe that.

He also revealed that Pompey turned down a £15 million bid on transfer deadline day for Lassana Diarra but wouldn't reveal who from. My guess is that it was most likely the team we've just beaten or the team that thrashed us 6-0 the week before.

Because I'm a Portsmouth fan there will always be a little seed of doubt in my mind that believes that we really are in financial trouble because after all there is no smoke without fire. However, I have always believed that Sacha is in it for the long haul and he comes across as a genuine bloke who knows what he is doing.

I'm sure he is sensible enough to know that over-investment a la Leeds United will lead to Pompey and himself being financially crippled and the sales of Muntari and Mendes to "balance the books" were needed if we were to avoid a financial meltdown.

If we were really in trouble I'd like to think that the board would have forseen these problems before we splashed out £11 million on Crouch and that if we did have problems then Diarra would have gone in August for sure.

I hope my faith in Sacha doesn't come back to bite me in the arse but he has already been fantastic for the club and Harry obviously enjoys working with him as he is always praising him in interviews.

There is a part of me that wouldn't want Sacha to sell to super-duper-ultra-mega-rich owners even if we did have more financial clout than Man City and Chelsea put together. Not just because the success would feel "plastic" but because I feel that Gaydamak has a vision that he wants to achieve at Pompey and I would like to see someone who has become a "fan" of the club reach his personal goals.

Let's hope that we have nothing to worry about come January and more importantly us fans get some tangible proof of the building of the new training complex and of course, the new stadium too.

Edit: Apologies for the late article but I've had some technical problems!
