Pompey Sign Trialist Evans

Paul Cook has opted to sign winger Gareth Evans on a one-year-deal after impressing him whilst on trial.

The 27-year-old has been arguably the outstanding performer during pre-season and pens a permanent contract with some pedigree in the lower leagues, having won promotion with Fleetwood and also represented Bradford and Rotherham at League Two level.

Evans' arrival means that the Pompey squad is now full of (potentially) quality wingers with Gary Roberts, Kyle Bennett, Kal Naismith and Ben Tollitt on the books. On paper, Paul Cook's midfield looks pretty strong.

With Matt Clarke almost certainly set to join the squad on loan shortly then the only position that needs strengthening looks to be at right back with Ben Davies and Frank van der Strujik vying for a contract. Another striker may well be a possibility but if Jayden Stockley makes an impact or Conor Chaplin continues to progress at a rapid rate then perhaps Cook will be happy with what he has up front.

Let's just hope there aren't too many injuries to worry about this season!
