Pompey Set To Sign Webber

It is widely expected that ex-Sheffield United and Watford striker Danny Webber will sign for Pompey tomorrow on a two year contract.

Webber is a free agent having been released by the Blades in the summer and so therefore he can be snapped up by Pompey. Paul Hart is said to be keen on Webber because Aruna Dindane won't be ready for action for a month and deals for Mark Viduka and Henri Camara look to be dead.

I don't know about you but I think that this might be scraping the barrel a bit and just shows how desperate we are. 47 goals in 243 appearances, mainly at Championship level, is not something Pompey should be looking at if we want to retain our Premier League status.

Of course, if Hart does already have one eye on the Championship next season (and I sure hope he does not) then this would be a good signing, especially as it will cost the club nothing in transfer fees.

Of course, I will be 100% behind Danny when he puts on a Pompey shirt and there is a small hope that he could surprise people with his pace, but I'm not expecting much.

On a brighter note, England qualified for the World Cup tonight after a complete demolition job on Croatia at Wembley. I was very impressed with the majority of the England players tonight and there is now a small part of me that believes we might actually have a chance of lifting the Jules Rimet trophy next year.

Having said that, Croatia were abysmal and were a shadow of the team that triumphed at Wembley two years ago. Slaven Bilic looked distraught as his team were being torn apart and to think that this man was championed by many to become the next Pompey boss. One swallow does not maketh a summer and Bilic now has a job on to get his talented team to beat Ukraine to 2nd place in the group.

But would he have sunk so low as to sign a player not good enough to play for Sheffield United? I do hope that statement comes back to bite a huge chunk out of me come the end of the season...
