Pompey Reserves 0 Chelsea Reserves 5

Portsmouth Reserves fell to their fourth straight defeat after getting caned by Chelsea Reserves tonight at Fratton Park. The Pompey side contained fringe players such as Dean Kiely, Noe Pamarot, Frank Songo'o, Richard Hughes and Andy Cole. The trialist "Berlin" made an appearance alongside youngsters Marc Wilson and Daryl Fordyce.

Chelsea fielded a hardly recognisable team that contained just one big name in Ivory Coast star Solomon Kalou and he gave Chelsea the lead after his pace and power allowed him to shrug off a challenge from one of the Pompey defenders and slot past Kiely. It was 1-0 at half-time but Andy Cole defined the word "Unlucky" after he missed a penalty, hit the crossbar, failed to tap in the ball from five yards out and scored a disallowed goal for a supposed "foul" outside the box by himself.

On the other hand, Chelsea got a huge slice of luck when a pass in midfield rebounded off of the referee and rolled straight into the path of Kalou who then had it easy to slot past Kiely for the second. The game got a bit heated after that as the referee took some abuse from the 1,304 fans who attended the game and some Pompey players made some rash challenges to find themselves booked in the second half.

Chelsea then began to turn up the heat themselves. Scott Sinclair is a highly rated player by any Chelsea fan worth their salt and he showed why he is rated so much after causing havoc on the left of midfield and scoring a great solo goal to put the visitors 3-0 up. Sinclair would continue to terrorize a weak Pompey defence and fire a shot that hit the post and went in as the West Londoners sealed the victory.

Chelsea then put the icing on the cake as yet again Sinclair was allowed to get into the box and have a shot that looked like it wasn't going in until Kalou prodded it over the line for his hat-trick and to completely establish Chelsea's dominance in the second half. I have a lot of sympathy for Deano as he made a couple of great one-on-one saves to keep the score down.

I also felt a bit sorry for Andy Cole who tried to make something happen in the second half when he had the ball but due to inferior players around him he was always left wanting. Once he gets a bit sharper, he'll be ready for the first team. Frank Songo'o also looked bright in the first half but apart from a spell of pressure in the first 45 when we were equal to Chelsea our reserves were pretty poor at the back and although 5-0 could be seen as a bit flattering, there was only going to be one winner once Kalou was gifted the second after an assist from the referee.

Ah well, as long as the first team don't get on the receiving end of this scoreline then there's no reason to be sad. Right?
